And as the vines filled me completely, I slipped away once more, caught in the grip of another shattering orgasm.

“Fuck... fuck... fuck!” I cried out, my voice ragged, broken, as the pleasure shook me to my core.

The vines pounded into me, unstoppable and uncaring. I came again and again, each orgasm leaving me weaker than the last. All the while, the plant drained my blood, turning me into a sticky, panting mess.

Then came the point where I didn’t care anymore. I hung limply, all fight gone, as my grip on life was loosening.

Chapter fifteen

DYFROEDD

Ihadfollowedthegirl and her lover since they had broken out of Emlyn’s dungeon. The human male had proven to be a natural protector, shielding her from many dangers she was not even aware of. That we had in common, and I had relaxed my caution, which I regretted soon enough.

Finding a stream in the wilderness was easy, but I had lingered too long. But after being confined in the icy cell, I had yearned to cleanse myself with running water. And maybe I had forgotten for a moment how ill-equipped the two humans were to survive the Gwerin wilderness, despite Than’s prowess.

I frolicked in the river, catching fish and filling my empty stomach. When I realized dawn was breaking, I had rushed to catch up with the two humans.

Then I had heard the sounds I had dreaded all along: Fae shouting, hounds barking, and above all, the girl’s terrified screams.

When I had caught up with them in a clearing, it had been too late. I caught a glimpse of the large male, his motionless body slick with blood as the dogs tore at him.

The girl was on the run, pursued by a half dozen dogs and their handlers. It took me no time to lure them away, turning them around until they stumbled into the lair of a shadow troll.

By the time they had defeated the creature, I was long gone, tracking my charge, my heart beating into my throat with anxiety. As if she had embedded an angling hook into my chest, her scent led me deeper into the forest.

I was impressed by how swiftly the little human was moving and how much distance she had covered while I distracted her pursuers. I had nearly caught up with her when her scent changed.

My heart stopped when I realized what she had done. She had walked straight into a clearing full of blood vines, one of the most noxious and deadly dangers in all of Gwerin. The parasitic plant lived off the blood of their prey. Its tendrils were strong and not easily snapped, but what made it so dangerous was its poison.

They subdued their victims by injecting them with a lust-inducing toxin. Their prey begged to be pleasured while the plant fucked them, all the while sucking them dry until nothing was left but a desiccated corpse.

But since it was not a fast process, I still had a chance to save the girl. Running at top speed, I crashed through the clearing until I reached her.

I stopped dead at the sight before me, my cock hardening at the sight.

The girl had not much time left. She was too weak to moan even, her head hanging forward. The only indication that she was still alive were the twitches that shivered across her limbs as the vines assaulted her.

Cursing my inappropriate erection, I ignored it as my water jets smashed the shoots apart that held her spread-eagled.

“Stay with me, human.” My voice was gruff as I worked to free her. “I will not let you die here.”

It took me but seconds to free her, destroying the awful creature that was torturing her. Then I carried her away from the clearing, holding her tightly against my chest. She was unconscious, her body slimy with green plant sap and blood.

I bedded her on soft moss and wiped some of the goo off her to check her injuries. Despite the gruesome sight, she had not lost too much blood. Her exhaustion was because of the toxin that was still running through her veins.

I thanked the Goddess for my foresight to always carry a bag of healing herbs and potions with me. First, I washed her until her skin was clean. Then I applied a healing ointment to the deepest cuts and nodded with satisfaction as they closed up immediately. There would be no visible scars, although the scabs were hideous and would itch when she woke.

The injuries to her mind were a different matter, but since she would be executed upon her return to Emlyn, those were none of my concern.

My stomach clenched, threatening to expel the fish I had consumed. I rubbed it, fighting down nausea. Gazing at her unconscious body, so small in comparison to mine, a strange longing overcame me.

What would it be like to be loved by one like her? Her head was turned to the side, her skin pale and clean after her ordeal. I had placed the torn shirt over her so she would not feel the cool forest air.

I had learned that humans were not to be trusted, and this kingslayer would be no exception. And yet, I had seen no evidence that she was a traitor to anybody. She had cared for Than deeply, despite the short time they had known each other.

In the dungeon, they had exchanged their stories in hushed whispers. She was an earth witch, a child compared to the century-old Fae. Her words had been sincere, never false.

I shook myself. It was not my concern. King Rhys had bound me to protect her, no more, no less. If she died, I would as well. But he had added a fail-safe: the true heir to the throne could release me from the burden. So it was in my interest to return her to Emlyn and hand her over to the new king Prys.
