“Let’s go!” I roared, pounding a fist on my chest. “First to tap out or pass out.”

Javal gave a nod, face twisted in a leathery smile. “Fight.”

The bull charged.

I braced for impact.

Avoiding his wide swing was a choice. The fresh burst of pain as his fist cracked into my shoulder instead of my jaw was...delicious. This was exactly what I needed. The heady intoxication of this vice helped keep my cool at those times it was needed—but not now. Now it was time to let the beast loose....

Chapter 9 – Briana

There was a distinctshift in the air, a feeling of another presence. My sleep-addled brain scrambled through the fog, and I woke up, jolting upright.

“Jeeze, suits! You almost cracked my skull,” Viktor said softly.

I gaped at him. “Saints, Tor! What are you doing in here?!”

“Waking up my beautiful girlfriend by bringing her breakfast in bed,” he drawled.

My heart still thundered in my chest. “But how did you get in here?”

I pulled the blanket up to my chest, conscious my sleeper set wasn’t exactly modest. The curtain was pulled back from the window, the pre-dawn purple and grey light streaking into the room, but Viktor’s face remained shrouded as he moved toward the bed. He was carrying something in his hands.

“Stop wriggling so I can set the tray down, suits.” There was a note of annoyance in his command. “You’ll have to eat up; we don’t have long to spare.”

“Aren’t you eating?” I asked. “And you didn’t answer my first question—how the hell did you get in here?”

“I had a protein shake when I woke up, and the second is for me to know and you to find out.”

Grumpily, I reached for the fork and stabbed at the tray. Something hot scalded my hand. I drew my fingers back with a hiss.

Viktor captured my wrist and pulled it toward him. I froze when his tongue lathed over the burnt digits. “Watch what you’re doing, suits,” he warned, releasing my hand.

It took a moment before I trusted myself to speak. Composure regained, I muttered, “If I could see in the dark like you, then I wouldn’t have burned myself on my coffee.”

Viktor snorted. The bed dipped as he leaned over and flicked the light on. I jumped, and the tray rattled.
