“Yeah, he did. And he sent pictures of you to his cronies,” Sophia piped in as she steadily strung a black thread through a curved needle.

“Come again?” I gaped at her.

“You’ve got a target on your back, my dear,” Sophia said evenly. “I’m going to go work my virtual magic the moment I’m done making sure numb nuts here doesn’t lose any more blood.”

The bandages I’d reached for fell from my fingers. Fluffy white gauze sailed onto the countertop.Target on my back.

“Oh, hell!” Viktor bit out. And then I was being pulled forward. Strong hands lifted me onto a barstool.

“You’re bleeding out!” Sophia snapped.

“She’s going to pass out,” Viktor snarled.

“I am not.” It didn’t sound as convincing as I’d meant it to.

Viktor let out an animalist growl. “Look, you’re safe here, Bri. This is our mess—and the reason I was trying to get you out of here.” A glare passed between the siblings. “Iwillkeep you safe, Briana. We’ll get you home as soon as possible, with no target on your back, I promise.”

Pissed. That was what I was. Everything else fell second to that. I splayed my hands on the counter, refusing to feel faint or show weakness.

“Sit still, kozjól,” Sophia growled, voice full of ticked-off worry.

“I will, but—”

“I’m fine,” I snapped, cutting Viktor off. “You two are going to fix this situation, and then I’m done.” Because even though I was strangely okay with their secret, it didn’t mean I wanted to be a part of it.

Viktor glared, and the effort he made to keep a comeback bottled up was evident by the clenching of his jaw. The minutes ticked by in tense silence as Sophia finished stitching him up. As soon as she taped the gauze in place, Viktor bolted, leaving the blood and mess behind.

Turning to me, Sophia said softly, “Please don’t hate me. I swear I had a damn good reason for dragging you into this mess.”

I rolled my eyes. “And what could that possibly be, Soph?”

“Viktor’s betrothed.”

Chapter 20 – Briana

Out of everything I’dheard and everything I’d been through today, that small tidbit Sophia dropped had the biggest blast radius. “I think we’re going to need those margaritas ASAP,” I whispered, struggling to find the air to breathe, let alone speak normally.
