“You’re going to have to explain, babe,” I menaced, sliding my hands up to dig into her waist.

Briana was panting, staring wildly up at me. “You’reengaged,Tor.”

I arched a brow in silent encouragement for her to elaborate.

“How dare you catch me out here in the dark and kiss me like it means something when you have no right to do so!” she spat.

I laughed darkly. “You kissed me back, suits.”

Briana brought her leg down and pushed against me. I didn’t budge. “Let me go, Viktor,” she snapped.

“Admit you weren’t into me. You couldn’t possibly be hot for amobster.” I didn’t know what madness had come over me. Having her around dulled my senses until I could only concentrate on her. At the airport, I wouldn’t have let anyone sneak up on me, let alone cut me, if I’d been alone.I should let her go. She’s only going to break my heart.

“It’s not that,” she ground out.

Damn me to the grave—I believed her. A sucker for punishment, I bent down and brushed a kiss across her jaw in silent thanks.

“Tell me one thing,” she demanded.

“Anything.”

“Did you know about your engagement at the wedding?”

Shit. She assumed I was scheming with Volkov about the engagement because she caught us talking before the ceremony? I pulled back and looked her straight in the eye. “At the wedding I was yours, Bri. I had never been more free than when I was with you on that island. I chose my own destiny on that trip.”

The questions were on the tip of her tongue. I pressed a finger against her lips, silencing the protests. This moment was going to burst; I could feel it like a bad omen. And yet I would do anything to keep her close a heartbeat longer.

“I wanted more, Bri. But I went to New York under the radar and was caught. Andrei Volkov wasn’t happy to find I was in his territory without his permission. There’s been some hot water, but I never cared what it meant, not until Volkov schemed with my uncle and played the victim card. This engagement is just me paying the piper, babe.”

Disgust, ripe and consuming, raced over her lovely features. “Then what the fuck are you doing down here with me? I’m not some escape.”

No, you’re the real thing, suits.I took a step back, feeling the cooler temperature seep between us.

“I’m done, Viktor. We’re through. Do you hear me?” Without another glance, she brushed past me.

“Loud and clear,” I called after her. But my body wanted it to be a lie, and my mind couldn’t see a way clear of the mess.
