Chapter 27 – Briana

Dragging me throughthe corridor and using the displays as cover, Viktor doubled back to the main event area. Through the partially closed doors came the sounds of screams and the bustle of panic, interlaced with rapid gunfire. Russian shouts flickered through the crack. The chaos made it impossible to understand what was happening.

Metal flashed in Viktor’s hands. Of course, he had a gun on him!

Viktor pulled me down beside a sculpted orb of glass and stone. “Stay here,” he ordered.

I scrambled to catch his arm. “No! I’m coming with you—”

“I’m extracting Sophia. Wait here—please!” Viktor stared at me, his gaze wild.

I swallowed the rebuttal. Of course, he was worried about his sister, and this was his arena. I let his arm go. “I will, Viktor. Be safe!”

He sucked in a sharp breath, heat pulsing in those blue depths. And then he was gone. The world became scary again. I ensured my skirts were pulled tight under me, knowing that I could be discovered at any time. Without any tools or skills, I knew my options were limited. If he doesn’t make it back—

I cut that thought down. Viktor would be fine. He had to be.

Bodies burst through the doors seconds later. Three masked individuals hauled a Bratva soldier between them. The Russian struggled, but it was futile. Before I could think or act, the aggressor, wearing a politician’s rubber mask, shot the soldier execution style. I bit the side of my hand, forcing back my scream. The attackers stood over the corpse, laughing. I didn’t dare breathe.

The two masked celebrities and the one looking like a politician didn’t run away. They muttered something, laughing again. The politician toed the dead body. The one wearing the mask of a female celebrity, clearly a male underneath, made a lewd gesture with his hips. “Slava da Metak!” he cheered.

“Death to swine,” Viktor roared back in Russian.

There were three succinct shots. The masked figures fell; one twitched. The movement sent bile up my throat, and I squeezed my eyes closed.

“Bri!” Sophia hissed, falling down beside me and gripping my arms. “Come on, hun. We can’t fall apart right now. We’re under attack.”

I blinked my eyes open and refocused on the scene playing out in front of me. But it wasn’t the death and gore that stole my attention, it was the monster—the one I was attracted to. Viktor and I stared hard at one another. Everything else, including his sister, fell away. He was alive. I wanted to run to him and hold him in a tight embrace. A searing kiss waited for me on his lips, and I needed to take it.

He’s not yours, that voice whispered.I blinked, looking away.

“Time to move,” Sophia clipped, pulling me up.

“Hell, you’re strong,” I mumbled, grabbing at my skirts.

“Gymnast,” she shot back, tugging me along after Viktor. We followed the looming mass of lethal energy. After a beat, she added, “You’re probably wondering what’s going on.”

I shrugged. “I figured this was par for the course for your family.”

“Eh, most are too scared for big scale attacks like this,” she said, the edge in her tone indistinguishable. “But it seems we’re at war with a rival gang.”

“Oh,” I breathed. “So this isn’t normal?”

This was by far the most excitement I’d ever had. It was inconclusive if I was feeling scared, but I trusted my friends. Adrenaline simmered, begging me to take some kind of action to help the Bratva.

“No, we’re kinda one of the top dogs in the underworld. They’re desperate to attack us like this.” This time there was a definite note of pride in Sophia’ voice.

Viktor stopped and looked through a cracked door. “Alright, it’s clear from the back. Here’s the spare key. Do you have your Glock?” he asked, turning to face his sister.

“Of course,” Sophia said, rolling her eyes dramatically.

Viktor placed something in her hand, then squeezed it. “Be safe, zaika. Get straight home.”

Sophia moved to say something, but Viktor pulled her in close, pushing the knuckles of his other hand under her chin. “I mean it, Sophia. Straight back to the villa.”

My friend reluctantly agreed, then asked, “Did you at least get phones off the fuckers?”
