Chapter 28 – Viktor

Once dropped off atmy villa, I stumbled through the limited security on detail. On my orders, most of the soldiers were laying low right now. We’d regroup in the morning, because this attack wouldn’t be stood for. My uncle would have to come down hard on the Metak, especially since his guests from New York were endangered. It was going to be a very ugly next couple of days.

I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling creeping up my chest. Sure, the Metak pricks were invested in brawling with us now that blood was spilled, but they still didn’t stand to gain anything from it. Which raised the question: who did?

I heard a noise and caught light from down the hall. Pushing into the kitchen, I sucked in a sharp breath when I found Briana perched on the counter, lounge shorts riding up her thighs. I stared at her greedily. With her face scrubbed free of makeup and her damp hair braided off her face, she painted an enticing image.

“Hi, suits,” I breathed.

She jerked her chin to the fridge. “There’s a vodka in the freezer for you, or there’s ice cream,” she ginned.

I laughed and went to the freezer. “That bruise looks good.”

“Are you kidding me? It’s hideous!” Briana exploded.

I bit back a smile. “I was trying to be nice.”

Briana huffed, and I selected a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. “Where did the ice cream come from?” I didn’t remember it there earlier, and the staff wouldn’t have delivered it when they came to clean and meal prep.

“It’s good for post-battle jitters.” Briana tried to make a joke, but her voice cracked on the last word.

I set the pint down beside her and inched closer. “You didn’t come straight back, did you?”

“I earned that ice cream with my mad driving skills, soldier boy,” Briana breathed, her body leaning into mine. Her eyes were clear and alert; she didn’t seem to be falling apart, and by the looks of things hadn’t gotten into the wine.

“Why are you awake, suits?”

Briana stiffened. She was so close that I could see the little hairs raised on her skin. “I wanted...no, Ineededto make sure you came back safe.” Her gaze dropped, taking in my ragged clothing. “Are you hurt?”

“Not tonight.”

“Oh,” she said, a drop in her voice.

I smirked slightly. “Were you hoping to take care of me again, Bri?”

Her gaze snapped to mine. That sharp inhale told me she understood the hidden meaning behind my words, but she didn’t take the bait. “As my friend’s brother, I need to make sure you’re okay. You’re the only thing Soph has.”

Ouch!“Nothing more?”

Briana threw up her hands. “Okay, so I care about you. I always will on some level. And if that’s twisted, then so help me!”

I moved forward, sliding my hand around the back of her neck. She gasped, lips parting in a way that had me hardening immediately.

The kiss was right there, waiting for me. I was going to claim it, repercussions be damned. “Stop me now,” I warned, pushing into her.

Those brown eyes widened, searching my face, then she leaned in—

The blare of an incoming call broke the moment. I wanted to crush the device; kill whoever dared interrupt us.

“Looks like I don’t have to,” Briana said with a sigh, pulling back. “I’ll get you a spoon.” Her taut body slid down from the countertop, brushing against mine.
