“I will find a way.”

“It’s okay. You don’t have to. I… I think I might be safer now.”

His eyes flared brighter gold. “You aremine, female. I will protect you with my life, until the day we cross the veil together.”

My own eyes widened.

What was I supposed to say to that?

What did it even mean?

“Okay,” I said, my voice trembling a bit.

“I must bite you, to claim you. The pain will be temporary, and the magic will heal you rapidly.”

Serae had mentioned the biting.

I tried to shrink back anyway. “Please, don’t hurt me.”

“I have no choice.” His fingertips brushed my chin gently, shocking me and freezing me in place.

A heartbeat later, his teeth found the place my neck met my shoulders.

I cried out as the sharp pain cut through me, but instead of pushing the man away, my hands wrapped around his thick arms.

He released my shoulder almost immediately, and his tongue dragged over the wound. He was right; the pain ended quickly.

His gaze lifted to mine, and I watched the golden glow fade from his eyes, leaving them a deep black color that somehow still glowed slightly, like Serae’s had.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low and gravelly.

“It’s okay,” I whispered. Somehow, I meant it. “Do you have food? And water? And shelter of some kind? I’d like to get off this cliff if I can.”

“Of course. You’ll need to hold on to me while I get us down.”

He was going to climb down the cliff.

Of coursehe was.

I nodded and he turned, lifting me onto his back with hands far gentler than I was acquainted with. My arms went around his neck. “Hold on tightly. What’s your name?”

“Rory.”

“Rory, I am Amarok. I’ll take you back to my pack, and never let another male touch your skin.”

My eyes widened. “Okay, then.”

Really, what else was I supposed to say to that?

I had seen the rage of a possessive man, and my body had taken the brunt of it. If werewolves were possessive, I would have to find a way out of whatever our mating was.

There wasn’t a chance in hell I would go through that again. Not if there was anything I could do to stop it.

But for the moment, Amarok was my best chance at surviving and figuring out the world I was in.

So, when he started climbing down, I held on for dear life.
