“I’ll give you a love parade,” I promise him with a smirk as I stand up and stretch, making him bark out a laugh.

Axel follows me out of the office and into the main part of the club where the event is set up today. The VIP section is where the food is and it’s the only destination which matters to me. I’m focused on getting there without being distracted, but then I see her.

She’s a beautiful woman with skin I want to lick and curls I want to wrap around my fingers as I tilt her head to kiss her hard and own her mouth. Own her entire body.

Because she’s mine.

I don’t realize my footsteps have stopped until Axel gives my shoulder a little nudge, but I don’t look at him. I can’t. I can’t tear my eyes away from this woman. My woman.

Since she’s sitting at a table, I can’t see much except for how what she’s wearing shows off her cleavage. The tunnel vision I succumbed to widens enough for me to realize my woman is at the speed dating event. A speed dating event she’s participating in.

Here. In this room with other men. Men who think she’s available.

She isn’t.

She sure as fuck isn’t single. Not now.

She’s mine.

My woman laughs and it lights up her entire face. It doesn’t sound forced, like she’s having a bad time and it makes me taste bile in the back of my throat. How am I going to get her out of this? How am I going to survive watching my woman interact with other men?

“You okay?”

Axel sounds far away and all I can manage is shaking my head. Maddox walks up, coming from the VIP area since I didn’t make it there before I was struck dumb and paralyzed by the vision in front of me. He asks Axel, “What’s going on with him? I thought he would want to check everything and then leave as fast as he could.”

Axel’s voice may as well be on the other side of a foggy marsh with how well I can hear him. It could be that my body is shutting down. I can’t hear over the sound of my blood rushing through my head like a freight train. “I think he just got sucker punched by a woman he wasn’t expecting here or anywhere else.”

Maddox lets out a low whistle, “Well, holy shit. I guess it’s a good thing you’re already at a dating event. It means she’s interested in something. That shit matters.”

Maddox and Penelope got together not long ago and had their own stresses and issues. She really thought the man was only her fake date, as if Maddox didn’t look at her like the moon rose and fell at her behest. It took Maddox some time to convince her he was in it for real and for the long haul, but I knew he wasn’t going to let her slip through his fingers.

She didn’t put herself out there at a dating event, though. Not like my woman is right now.

Red clouds my vision for a moment when the guy who is sitting with her reaches out and places his hand over hers. She doesn’t pull away. She lets him touch her.

Yes, I know she doesn’t know I exist, but my caveman brain doesn’t care. I’m pretty sure my muscles are getting larger the longer I’m looking at them together.

Is that a thing? Do I now have the ability to Hulk smash? Just from seeing the woman who I’m going to marry talking to another guy as if I’m not right fucking here?

When she smiles at him, I murmur, “I think I’m going to be sick.”

I start to take a step toward them, needing to put an end to this. It rides me so hard I can hardly see straight. The only thing stopping me is Axel’s hand on my shoulder. Or it could be Maddox’s hand. I don’t know and I don’t care.

One of them coos like I’m a damn stallion who needs to be tamed, “Easy, Silas.”

I don’t need to be tamed. I’m a rabid fucking animal and I want blood. Right now.

I snarl, “You better let me the fuck go right now.”

Maddox steps into my line of sight, but I can barely see him. He doesn’t let me ignore him and gets right in my face. “You can’t go over there like this. She doesn’t know. I bet if you really look beyond the façade, you’d see that she’s nervous and unsure. You can’t go stomping over there like a crazed madman and start making demands.”

“I wasn’t going to make demands,” I insist.

Axel chuckles next to me. “You can lie to yourself all you fucking want, I guess, but we know the truth. It’s written all over your face. You were going to stomp over there and insist she stop this whole speed dating thing. You can’t. She’ll just get all defiant and stubborn and shit.” He rolls his eyes, “You know how the women in this family are and if she’s one of them then there’s no escaping it.”

I hate it, but I know he’s right. I check my watch; this should be the last date anyway. I slide a little closer to the VIP area, but my job of checking on the food is long forgotten. I don’t give a flying fuck what these people eat. All of them except my girl. Her, I care about a great deal.

I wonder if she ate my food or if she was too nervous.
