Gods above, I want him to rip my dress off and fuck me hard against this wall just so that I can feel alive for one fucking second.

Pushing down that absolutely insane impulse, I remind myself that Rico is an enemy who will get me killed if I don’t manage to fool him.

“I’ve already told you,” I reply, making my voice the absolute opposite of his. Submissive instead of dominant. “You’re a Hunter, and no one refuses you anything.”

He lets his hand drop from my thigh. The loss of it leaves me feeling strangely empty. His other hand, however, remains resting lightly at the base of my throat.

“I see you, you know,” he says, and the seriousness in his tone and on his features sends a spike of alarm through me. He runs an assessing glance over my body before meeting my eyes again. “Living a life that doesn’t belong to you.”

A chill snakes down my spine.

It suddenly feels as if he can see through me. See through all of my masks and right down into the soul that I’m not even sure I actually have.

However, before I can figure out what to say, he takes his hand off my throat and lets it drop back down by his side. Then he takes a step back and jerks his chin in the direction of the front door.

“Go,” he says, his voice suddenly strangely empty.

My brows knit in surprise and confusion. He’s letting me leave? Just like that?

But I’m not one to miss opportunities when I’m handed them on a silver platter, so I quickly slip away from the wall and start towards the door. The crowd swallows me immediately.

However, before I reach the front door, I turn around and glance back at the hallway.

Rico is still standing there.

Looking more lost than ever.

RICO

Annoyance flits across Mr. Hansen’s face as Kaden, Jace, and I stroll into his training hall. All the first-years standing on the padded mats stop sparring and glance hesitantly between us and their instructor.

“Hunter,” Mr. Hansen says, keeping his tone carefully neutral. “Do you need something?”

“We figured we’d help some of the first-years,” I reply.

“Did you now?” he grumbles.

Coming to a halt, I raise my eyebrows and shoot him a pointed look. “What was that?”

Tension crackles between the concrete walls like lightning. Some of the students even suck in sharp breaths. Because no one talks back to the teachers at Blackwater.

No one except us.

As per my grandfather’s decree, the Hunter brothers are untouchable. It was easier to make all of us untouchable than for him to try to explain why only I was beyond reproach without revealing my true identity. Eli was the one who mostly used those privileges, but I’m not above pulling rank in order to get what I want, so I intend to make full use of them now.

Mr. Hansen looks like he wants to teach me a lesson, or three, in humility. But no one disobeys orders that have come from the mafia king Federico Morelli himself, so in the end, he just swallows down his annoyance and grunts.

“I said, alright,” he amends it to. After a somewhat stiff shrug, he motions at the rest of the room. “Knock yourselves out.”

Shock bounces from face to face as the group of first-years stare at us. Though, notallfaces.

At the back of the room, Isabella rolls her eyes from where she probably thinks I can’t see her.

The first-years have been split into several groups for the lessons this morning, so not all of them are here. But my target is.

And so is Kaden’s. His dark eyes dance with anticipation as he sets course straight for Alina. The blond girl blinks in surprise and then glances from side to side, as if hoping that someone will intervene. Naturally, no one does.
