“You know, how you catch more flies with alcohol than vinegar, and all that?”

“Honey,” Kaden says.

“Yes, darling?” Jace replies.

A laugh rips from my chest.

By the wall, Kaden shoots his little brother a dark look. Mischief glitters in Jace’s eyes as he flashes him a grin.

Before Kaden can decide to stab him and get blood all over my cream-colored sheets, I intervene. “It’s,you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Not alcohol.”

“You can catch plenty of flies with a half full can of beer too,” Jace says, returning his attention to me. He shrugs. “Just saying.”

I massage my brows. “Alright fine. But what does this have to do with Isabella?”

“You’ve tried forcing her to tell you everything. I’m just saying that maybe it’s time to try a different tactic.”

“Such as?”

“Seducing her.”

Kaden snorts. “Of course that would be your idea, you manwhore.”

“Hey.” Jace sits up straight, leveling the bat in his brother’s direction while shooting him an angry glare. “Being experienced does not make me a whore.”

“No. But sleeping with half of Blackwater does.”

“Fuck you. It’s not my fault that everyone here is so fucking boring.” A vicious smile curls his lips. “And besides, at least I’m not obsessing over the enemy.”

Kaden’s expression darkens. “I’m not obsessing over the enemy.”

“Alina is a Petrov. Have you forgotten that?”

“I’m not obsessed with her.” Sliding a knife from his thigh holster, he starts spinning it threateningly in his hand. “I’m toying with her. Tormenting her. Using her as a tool to get back at Mikhail and to finally break that whole fucking family.”

Jace snorts and rolls his eyes. “Sure. And—”

“Enough,” I snap. Scrubbing a hand over my face, I heave a sigh and then rest the handle of the gun against my temple. The metal is cool, easing some of the throbbing headache that has started behind my eye. Looking from Kaden to Jace, I raise my eyebrows and give them a pointed look. “Either say something useful or get the fuck out before I shoot you both just to get some damn peace.”

After one more dirty look in Kaden’s direction, which Kaden answers with a true psychopath smile, Jace turns back to me. “I’m saying that maybe you should try to seduce her instead. You know, take her out to dinner and all that. Be nice to her. Get her to trust you. To like you. Then she might tell you what you want to know willingly.”

“Or you could just torture it out of her,” Kaden says, twirling the knife with expert movements while his customary sadistic smile settles on his lips. “Much faster.”

Jace groans and rolls his eyes in annoyance. Then they launch into an argument about what the most effective way to get information actually is. I tune them out, because my mind is churning.

I already know that I won’t torture Isabella. But Jace might actually be onto something. Fake dating her to get her to trust me?

It’s worth a shot.

ISABELLA

When Friday evening rolls around, that tiny sprout of hope in my chest has finally started to take root. I haven’t seen Rico in two whole days. Not since he dropped me off at my apartment after that little stunt in the woods. Could it be that he has finally fallen for my carefully crafted lies and my award-worthy performance as the mediocre student Isabella Johnson?

With that hope glittering in my chest, I stroll into my apartment and then lock the door behind me. Our afternoon class today involved getting through an obstacle course, which meant that some of that time was spent crawling through mud. It had mostly dried by the time class was finished, so I opted to drive home and shower here instead. Wouldn’t want Rico to ambush me in the shower room again.

The memory of his dominant hands on my body flash unbidden through my mind, and a small voice deep inside whispers:Or would I?
