“First of all, fuck you very much,” he says around a mouthful of food. Then he swallows before stabbing his fork in Kaden’s direction. “Secondly, there could never be two of me because I’m strictly one of a kind. A special limited edition, if you will. And thirdly, if there were two of me, we would be a fucking delight.”

I laugh while Kaden shakes his head in exasperation. Jace, apparently satisfied with his comeback, grins at us both before once more attacking his mountain of pasta. I slide my attention back to my own plate too, but only end up picking at it.

“It’s that girl though, right?” Kaden says. “Isabella Johnson. She’s why you were drumming your fingers like a restless banshee, isn’t she?”

Slumping back in my chair, I blow out a long sigh and admit, “Yeah.”

After I confronted her outside her apartment building yesterday morning, I haven’t done anything else about it. I have been waiting six years for this. For a chance to finally get some answers. And now that it’s here, I don’t want to screw it up.

Kaden’s dark eyes, those eyes that always seem to see far too much, are locked on me. “What can we do to help?”

“Yeah,” Jace adds around another mouthful of pasta. “Just say the word and we’re in.”

“I was actually considering—” I begin right before Jace shoots up from his seat.

“Incoming,” he snaps.

Kaden and I whip towards the window that he’s staring through. My hand is already resting on my gun, and Kaden has a knife out while Jace has snatched up a bat that he had left lying on the couch earlier. I know that we give Jace a lot of shit for being loud and reckless and for having a terribly short attention span, but he’s actually much more aware of his surroundings than most people assume.

I narrow my eyes at the black Audi A8 that stops in front of our house.

“Isn’t that one of the boss man’s cars?” Jace says.

Once again, much more aware than people assume.

“Yes,” I confirm.

I slide my gun back into the holster as I watch Andrea climb out of the car. He is wearing a dark suit, as usual, and couldn’t look more conspicuous if he tried. Jace and Kaden flick uncertain glances at me.

“Has something happened?” Kaden asks as we watch Andrea walk up to our door.

I shake my head. “I don’t know.”

The sofa cushions let out a faint huff as Jace tosses his bat back down. Kaden slides his knife back into its sheath as well. Then we start towards the door. Andrea might be many things, but he is never a threat. Not to me anyway.

We reach the door before he does, and I push it open right as he walks up to it.

“Is something wrong?” I ask before Andrea has even come to a halt.

His features are blank, as always, as he meets my gaze. “Mr. Morelli has ordered me to bring you to him straight away.”

“Is something wrong?” I repeat, hard authority bleeding into my voice this time.

Discomfort flickers briefly in Andrea’s brown eyes. “Please just get into the car, sir.”

Which means that he has been ordered not to say anything. I force out an annoyed breath and then turn to grab my shoes.

“Do you want us to come with you?” Jace asks as I put my shoes on.

I straighten and open my mouth to respond, but Andrea speaks before I can.

“The invitation was for you alone,” he says, still only focused on me.

After shooting him a hard look, I shift my attention back to Kaden and Jace. Both of them only look back at me, waiting for my answer. Even though they know what the repercussions would be if they came with me despite not being invited, they would still do it if I asked them to.

My heart squeezes in my chest.

Jace, Kaden, and Eli might not be my brothers by blood, but they are my brothers in every way that counts.
