Before he can reply, Mr Khanna is back with a huge diamond in a blue box. It’s a stunning ruby and diamond ring. Mounting two-tone, combining both yellow and white gold in a custom-designed band. Wow!

“What do you think of this beautiful piece?” Mr Khanna asks with pride in his voice.

“It’s lovely,” I reply as I admire the ring.

“Take the measurements and bill this,” Ranveer replies.

“How much?” I ask hesitantly.

“It’s eighty lakhs,” he says, and my mouth drops open.

Ranveer pulls out his card when I place my hand on his to stop him. He meets my gaze and sees the turbulence in my eyes.

“Can I have a moment with my fiancée?” I smile at Mr Khanna.

“Of course, I will be at the cash counter. Give me a buzz once you need me.” Saying that, Mr Khanna leaves us.

Turning back to Ranveer, I speak, “You don’t have to buy something so extortionate. I’ll choose a cheaper…”

“I don’t buy cheap stuff,” he says sternly and glares at me which makes me shiver.

“But isn’t this way too overpriced?”

“Not for me,” he replies and rises to his feet as he walks in the direction of Mr Khanna. Having no choice, I follow behind him.

“Bill it,” Ranveer says, holding out his card.

Mr Khanna takes the measurement of my ring finger and informs him that he shall deliver it within two days.

“I still feel you didn’t have to buy that ring. We could have found something else,” I say cautiously as we step out of the store.

“This matter is not up for debate. I will do as I please.”

“Of course, Mr Richie Rich,” I mumble to myself.

Walking back to his car, we are on our way back.

“Bye,” I say and exit his car as he stops in front of my house.

“Next time don’t forget our plans,” he calls out, and before I can turn around to reply, he is already gone.

Rude! Welcome to hell, Alisha. I take a deep breath and try to compose myself before walking towards my house.

Chapter 9

Ranveer

“You do realise what you are doing?”

I look up from my laptop to see Akshay, who strides into my office and takes his seat opposite me. I fight like hell at the irresistible impulse to lash out at him for taunting me. It’s something beyond my ken. Taking a few seconds to compose myself, I take a couple of deep breaths knowing I’m more on edge than I usually am. The only reason he is my best friend is, he knows what I expect of him — to stand by me as a friend and not give me his expert advice.

“I don’t remember seeking your counselling advice.” I divert my attention back to scrolling through my emails. The last thing I want is his moral guidance.

“Well, at some point, we all do need to rely on experts.” He wiggles his eyebrows in an annoying manner.

“You suck at it.”

“Nevertheless, I am here. So, kindly enlighten me. I was under the assumption you didn’t want to get married. In fact, the last time we met,you were not interested in this and were only willing to put up with this sham for your grandfather’s sake. And now you are on a roll, first shopping for wedding rings, then hiring event planners, which, by the way, is projecting another story. What changed?” He says as he leans back on his chair, trying tostudy me.
