“Rude?” He laughed cruelly. “What’s rude is you showing up at my house with my boss who you’re fucking.”

Aithan raised his hands like he was trying to calm an enraged bull. “She thought it was better than sending it to the gym with me.”

“Did she really?” Tristan sneered. “Because you didn’t want a scene?”

“Looks like we’re getting one anyway,” I muttered.

“Thought I’d be grateful? Maybe even happy to see you? Are you fucking crazy, Deep Throat?”

Fuck you. He’d never called me that when we were together; maybe he’d said it behind my back. Maybe he’d joked about it with his loser Bellingham friends. He obviously meant to piss me off with it now, and it was working. “Yeah, I must be nuts. It’s the only explanation for putting up with a dick like you for so long.”

“Well, I can’t believe I wasted so much time with a fat slut.”

“Fuck you. I just had the best fuck of my life, so I know what a limp-dicked asshole you are. The comparison isn’t flattering.” From the corner of my eye, I saw Candace wince; this was not heading down a good path.

I grabbed Aithan’s arm. “We should go. This was a mistake.”

“No shit,” Tristan said.

Aithan turned to open the door.

I shook my head. It was hard to look at my ex. Anger distorted his face and knowing I caused it made my stomach churn. “I didn’t come here to piss you off, Tristan. And, for what it’s worth, I’m sorry I didn’t see sooner what a train wreck our relationship was.”

“Fuck off, cunt.” He stepped forward and spat in my face.

I gasped and jerked back.

Aithan moved fast. He pinned Tristan against the wall, forearm across his collar bones, hand locking Tristan’s fist to his side. “Calm down, man,” he said, his own voice remarkably controlled. He was the taller and broader man and used that to his advantage, leveraging his weight against Tristan.

“Get the fuck off me!”

“Not until you chill out. I’m not gonna let you hurt Zelda. You know that.”

“Fuck you, man.”

“That’s not helpful.” Aithan leaned into the hold and Tristan gasped. “Does Candy need to call the cops?”

“What?” Tristan’s eyes widened, fear replacing anger. “Fuck no. I’m no threat.”

“You spat in Zel’s face, and you threatened to wreck her career. What part of that makes you not a threat?”

Breathing slowly to control my nerves, I wiped his saliva off my cheek with my sleeve. “You’re not thinking straight, Tristan.” My voice was even, thank God. “This is assault and the text messages are cyberstalking. I’ll let them go uncharged, but I’m seeking a protection order against you.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Tristan’s gaze fell on me and he looked trapped, wide-eyed and at the end of his rope. I knew involving the police could mean unsealing his juvenile record.

Candace rolled her eyes. “Her dad’s a lawyer, dip-shit. Of course she’s not kidding.”

“Let’s leave, Aithan,” I repeated.

His gaze pinned to Tristan, he spoke to Candace. “You gonna be alright with him here?”

“Yeah. I’m not worried.”

“I’m not a fucking threat to anyone, man!”

Aithan obviously didn’t believe that. “Are you sure, Candace?”

She nodded. “Yep. Tristan and I are cool. You guys go. I’ll work this out with our boy.”
