“Okay. Tomorrow. Bye, Mom. I love you.”

“I love you, too, honey. Bye.”

I hung up and took the flowers, burying my face in them and breathing deeply. “Are you for real?” I kissed him hard.

He slid his hands around my waist and returned the favor, nipping my lower lip and grabbing my ass. “I think so.” He followed me upstairs. “I take it Mom’s worried?”

“Greer called her. My mom wants my sister and me to be friends and has a thousand excuses for her bitchiness.” I searched the cupboards and finally found a vase from flowers my Dad had sent me when I signed with my agent. The roses went into the vase with water and the little packet of weird crystals florists insist keep them alive longer. I put them in the middle of the dining table next to the gerberas. Lulu and Frank immediately jumped up to inspect them. They sampled the leaves then decided they weren’t tasty enough to bother with and head-butted Aithan for love instead.

He happily obliged, rubbing ears and chins, and eliciting purrs of delight.

“I thought you’d be at the gym all day,” I said.

“I was. It’s seven. Did you lose track of time?”

I glanced at the clock. “Shit. I totally did.” I fed the cats while he inspected the contents of the refrigerator. “Empanadas?”

“Yeah, beef. You want to try one? They’re made with cassava flour and lots of garlic.”

“Mmm, sounds awesome.” He pulled the container from the fridge. “What kept you so busy?”

“Recording and editing. My brain spinning out of control. My mom pissing me off.” I waggled my head. “You know, the usual.”

He laughed. “Your brain’s always running rampant?”

“My brain is unreasonably overactive.”

He brushed my hair back and kissed my forehead. “Stovetop, oven, or microwave?”

“Microwave works great.” I wrapped four in paper towels and plated them. He put them in and started heating them while I pulled out leftover salad from our lunch with Tobias and Candace, and sliced an avocado.

“How’s everything at Blue Water?”

“Quiet. Which is good. No one seems bothered by Tristan’s tantrum.”

“What will you do about him?”

“Juan gave him the rest of the week off.” He set out plates. “It means I have to cover his classes, but I’m hoping he’ll screw his head on straight with the paid break.”

I sniffed. “I hope so too.”

“Any word from that lawyer?”

“Yeah. I’m waiting for him to confirm an appointment time next week.”

“Good.”

The microwave beeped and we sat down and ate. Aithan loved the empanadas. “They’re different from the ones I’ve had, but I like them just as much. The filling is delicious.”

“These are one of my favorite AIP foods. Easy to make, they last a long time, and everyone likes them.”

“Did you finish Drew’s novel?”

“No, not yet. But I finished and sent off an erotic short story.”

He paused in clearing the table. “Erotic?”

“Yeah.” I grinned, liking the spark in his eyes. “You wanna hear it?”
