As the blades slowly came to a stop, we watched two men get out of the helicopter and head towards us.

Gideon looked exactly like his photo, his suit well put together and probably more expensive than my car.

His eyes instantly landed on me as he approached, the younger man who walked next to him was scanning everyone else.

As they stopped in front of me, he smiled and held out his hand.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Anya.” He said and I looked at his outstretched hand, noticed the small gold ring with a symbol I couldn’t quite make out then took a step back.

“I have no interest in shaking the hand of a man who tried to buy me from my mother,” I said and he sighed.

“I was younger then with far less tact. I did not mean to come across to your mother like I was buying you. I heard about the situation with Sergei and I wanted to help. I wanted her to know that if she didn’t want…” He paused and I raised an eyebrow at him.

“If she didn’t want to keep me. You can say it, I am a big girl.” I said and he nodded.

“Then I would be able to take you and give your mother enough income for her to be able to leave this place. It was only after that I found out how deep Austin had gone with the Fellowship and I couldn’t do anything about it then.” He added and I glanced at Gabriel as he stepped closer to the man with him.

“I’ve seen that symbol before.” He said, pointing at the man's hand.

“Angel wings,” Anatoly whispered and Gabriel grinned, but it was the kind of grin I imagined the wolf gave Little Red Riding Hood before he ate her.

“You were at the Russian compound.” He said and the man glanced at Gideon who nodded.

“Yes. I was there to gather information on the people who were loyal to Ivan. There were Fellowship members who had their own mission within his people.” He said with a shrug.

“Who are you?” I asked as I looked between him and Gideon.

“We are a group that is almost as old as the Fellowship. Our purpose is and always was to stop them.” He said seriously and William cocked a brow at him.

“Are you serious? Like some kind of good versus evil thing?” He said and Gideon smiled.

“Sort of. Only we aren’t exactly the good guys either.” He looked at me.

“Can we discuss this inside? The heat is rather uncomfortable.” He said and I hesitated before letting him in.

Rosslyn was at the table with Anouska and when she saw us, she got up and went to the lounge room, Anatoly following her.

When everyone was seated, I looked at Gideon, wanting to get this over with. He may not be looking to hurt me, but I still felt like I was just a means to an end for him.

“Why does the Fellowship want me?” I asked and he sat back in the chair, folding his arms neatly.

“Because the man you know as the Collector has a personal vendetta against me and when he discovered who you are, who your mother was, he orchestrated it all to get back at me.” He said and I stared at him, shock and disgust rocking me.

“Are you saying that Sergei was sent to meet my father all those years ago because this man wanted to get back at you?” I couldn’t believe that one man was so petty but the look in Gideon's eyes told me the truth.

“Yes. But I didn’t find out until after you were born. By then, it was too late for me to stop anything. I left your mother and grandmother to protect them. I sent money but it was left untouched. I tried to give that money to your mother and continued to contribute to it, but she also left it untouched. The money is yours if you wish. The account is still there.” He said and I didn’t understand.

“I don’t get it. Why would you leave them without saying anything? Why would you do any of this? Why does that man hate you so much?” I said and he looked out the window towards Devils Tooth Ridge.

His eyes were haunted as if all the memories of his past had just caught up with him before he looked back at me, his face grim.

“Because I killed his father in front of him.”
