“Right.”

“Tally said you were a tough nut to crack.”

“Tally… let me guess, she’s the queen bee of All Hallows’ and you’re just one more of her willing minions.”

“I… that’s… it isn’t like that.” Something passes over her expression. “Tally is a good person.”

“I’m sure she is,” I scoff.

“You know you really shouldn’t judge people until you get to know them.”

“Whatever, you can go now.” I give her my shoulder again, really wanting to be done with this conversation. Like I’ve said before I’m not here to make friends and I certainly don’t need Little Miss Goody Two-Shoes trying to put me in my place.

The girl—Abi, I think she said her name was—drills holes into the side of my head and finally, I relent, unable to stand her heated stare any longer.

“What?” I snap, hating that she’s looking at me like she sees straight through my façade.

“You know, Raine, we all need a friend now and then.”

“I don’t need anyone.”

She regards me for a second longer, murmuring, “We’ll see,” under her breath, before she turns and walks off, leaving me alone.

She’s wrong. I don’t need anyone. I learned that the hard way.

Agitated, I shove my sketch pad and pencils into my bag and tap my foot on the floor, my gaze darting around the fancy centre.

I don’t belong here, that is dreadfully obvious, and I still don’t know what Trudy and the board were thinking sending me here.

But it’s only a few months. I’ve survived worse.

I’m about to bolt, to say to hell with it when a girl enters the building.

A girl I recognise.

“You,” I say to the girl I saw crying outside the dorm the other day.

She cuts me with a scathing glare and continues walking.

Okay then.

I’m about to shout after her, to ask her what the hell her problem is when a young woman appears, fixing her warm smile right at me.

Great. This must be the counsellor.

“Raine?”

“The one and only.” I stand, throwing my bag over my shoulder.

“It’s so lovely to meet you. I see you found the place okay.”

“It’s literally across from my dorm,” I deadpan.

Her lips twitch. “Yes, well, why don’t you follow me to my office, and we’ll get started.”

“Great.” Not.

“How are you liking All Hallows’ so far?” she asks as I follow her down the hallway.
