“Um…”

As we climb the stairs, I’m suddenly struck with a bolt of nerves.

Until Olivia and Reese started hooking up, no girls were allowed upstairs. They’re still not unless they’re a girlfriend. Elliot had no choice but to tweak that rule once Abi and Tally joined the group.

I shouldn’t be taking Raine up there. She’s not my girlfriend and is unlikely to ever be. But there’s this weird need growing inside me that I want her in my space. I want to see how she looks, how she acts in my domain instead of hers.

Will she be as confident, or will she let her walls drop enough for me to get a few more glimpses of the real girl hiding behind the façade she shows the rest of the world?

“And this is where all the magic happens,” I say, throwing my bedroom door open.

“I bet you say that to all the girls,” she teases, stepping inside, and scanning the contents.

“No other girl has ever been up here,” I blurt like a prick.

Shock rocks through her before she turns around, her eyes locking on mine.“So why am I?”

And well, if that isn’t the million-dollar question.

RAINE

“So why am I?”

The words hang between us, heavy loaded. And Theo looks every bit as uncomfortable as I feel.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

I wasn’t supposed to develop feelings for one of All Hallows’ cocky, entitled Heirs.

Yet, here we are.

I’m in his room, in his domain, and despite the trickle of unease sliding down my spine, like this might all be part of some trick to get one over on me, I also feel an odd sense of relief.

Theo stares at me, lifting his shoulder in a small dismissive shrug. “Wish I knew the answer.”

“If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t expect to end up here either.”

“Honestly, sunshine.” He takes a step toward me. “I’m not sure that it does.”

“I’ll ask you again, Teddy.” I crane my neck to look up at him as he towers over me. “Why am I here?”

“You know”—he reaches for a strand of my hair, toying with it—“I don’t think there’s a single person I’d let get away with calling me that.”

“Except me.”

“Except you.”

“Sounds dangerous.”

“Oh, it is.” His lips curve with wicked intent and he leans down to kiss me I assume. But I duck out of his way, putting some much-needed space between us.

He lets out a small, frustrated breath behind me but I don’t turn around. If I do, I’ll cave. I’ll give into the undeniable chemistry between us, and I need to keep my wits about me.

I need to keep my walls intact before I figure out what I want from all this.

From him.
