“Theo,” she whispers, her grip on the back of my neck tightening.

But unlike what I was expecting, I don’t see pity in her eyes.

Just understanding.

“What about your mum?” I ask, needing a reprieve from talking about ours.

A sad laugh spills from her lips. “My mum never had issues not taking pills. She was more than willing to swallow whatever she could get her hands on and chase them with vodka, or whisky, hell she’d probably even go for a glass of piss if it were the only thing on offer.

“I spent my life watching her get off her tits while men took their turn coming all over them.”

“Jesus,” I grunt at the brutality of the image she paints.

“Fuck knows how I stayed with her as long as I did. She was probably blowing the social worker who used to turn up to check on my well-being. He was a creep just like the rest of them.”

“How old were you when they took you away?”

“Seven.”

“Foster home?” I ask, desperate to uncover more about this mysterious girl who’s wormed her way under my skin without permission.

“Yeah. Then another, then another, then a couple of group homes.”

“Shit.”

“Yeah. Apparently, I’m hard to deal with. Who knew.”

I can’t help but laugh. “They clearly all got you wrong, sunshine.”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“So what was it you did that almost landed you in juvie?” I ask. She shut it down so fast last time that really, I’m not expecting an answer. And she doesn’t disappoint.

“What happened? How did she…”

“Kill herself?” I ask bluntly.

Raine nods.

“Overdose. Those pills I so diligently ensured she took thinking they’d keep her alive were what ended her.”

“That’s not your fault,” she says, closing what little space there is between us.

“I know that. It’s his,” I growl dangerously.

“Did he—”

“Enough talking, sunshine.” I steal her lips in a searing kiss before she gets a chance to argue with me.

Her hands push against my chest, trying to shove me away, but she doesn’t stand a chance.

Not only am I stronger than her, I’m also determined.

I might be willing to do the right thing and not fuck her six ways from Sunday in my little sister’s bed but that doesn’t mean we’re going to do nothing.

My sister got in the way earlier. I figure she owes us.

“Theo,” Raine cries when I grind against her.
