“What does it mean exactly?”

“What do you know about Saints Cross and All Hallows’?” she asks, adding a thin layer of jam to her toast. She cuts it into four triangles and offers me the plate.

“I’m good, thanks.”

“More for me.” Millie shoves a whole piece into her mouth.

I wait for her to finish. She grabs her juice, drains the contents and wipes her mouth with the back of her hand. “Saints Cross is built on the money of some of the oldest and most influential families in Oxfordshire. Lawyers. Judges. Politicians. The kids of said families attend All Hallows’ and then Saints Cross U to follow in their parents’ footsteps. It’s just a way to keep the legacy alive.”

“And when you say kids…”

“Sons. I mean, their sons. Welcome to the twenty-first century, where women have equal rights so long as the men say it’s okay.” She rolls her eyes.

“How old are you again?”

Because she seems so wise beyond her years.

“Don’t let my age fool you.” Millie flashes me a wry smile.

“So Theo and his friends are all Heirs. The other students treat them like they’re royalty.”

“Because they practically are here.”

“Sounds like loads of rich kid bullshit if you ask me.”

“It’s just how it is and always has been.” She shrugs again.

“And the Heir chasers?”

“Ugh.” Another eye roll.

“Not a fan?”

“It’s disgusting, the way they throw themselves at my brother and his friends. Reese and Oakley are off the market now, but it doesn’t stop them. I suspect we’ll see a few bitch fights before the year’s out.”

“Tallulah Darlington goes out with Oakley, right?”

“Yeah. Nobody saw that coming. She’s always hated the Heirs. But I guess love and hate are two sides of the same coin or something.”

“Right.”

“What about your brother and Keeley…”

“Keeley Davis? Please. She’s nothing more than a desperate slut. My brother would never get with somebody like her.”

I’m not so sure about that but I swallow any more questions I have.

“All Hallows’ isn’t so bad if you stay under the radar.”

“Is that what you do?” I ask, and Millie nods.

“I try to. Although my brother makes it impossible sometimes.”

“Why do you board here if your family lives in Saints Cross?”

Her whole demeanour changes, her gaze dropping to the floor.

“Millie, what’s—”
