“You’re smothering me. If I’m hungry, I’ll eat. If I oversleep and am late then I’ll take the punishment. If I want to talk to someone, then I will. I’m allowed friends, Theo. I’m allowed to at least try and have a normal life.”

“You can have friends. Girls in your own year who aren’t already practising to be Heir chasers, yeah.”

“They all want to be Heir chasers and you know it.” She scoffs. “So what? I’m meant to be lonely and friendless for my entire time here? Is that what will make you happy?”

“Millie, that’s not what I’m saying,” I sigh, hating that we seem to spend more time fighting than anything else these days.

All I want to do is protect her. To allow her to live a life that isn’t tainted by the bullshit that surrounds us.

“So what are you saying exactly because I think I’m missing the point?”

“Just stay away from her,” I repeat, dragging my hand down my face in frustration.

Why her?

Of all the people at All Hallows’, why does my little sister seem to want to befriend her?

“Why? What do you know about her that I don’t? Why is she such a bad person to spend time with?”

My teeth grind as I stare back at a pair of eyes that are freakishly similar to mine.“She… she…”

Fuck.

Words escape me.

“You’re unbelievable, Theo.”

Before I manage to come up with any kind of answer, she’s gone, running up the stairs and away from me.

The temptation to follow and continue is strong, but I’m aware that I don’t have anything solid to say as to why she shouldn’t be spending time with Raine other than a bad feeling. So I spin in the opposite direction and throw the front door to the Bronte Building as if it personally offended me.

“Fucking great,” I bellow when I’m met with a face full of rain and a bitter wind. Just what I fucking need.

By the time I get into the Orwell Block where all the sixth form classes are held, I’m soaking fucking wet. And just because the universe hasn’t shit on me enough already today, the first person I lay eyes on is Raine.

She’s standing next to her locker, staring at me with a wicked smirk playing on her lips. She’s bone dry, her dark hair still styled perfectly, and her make-up as immaculate as when she first applied it. But it’s not her appearance that draws me in, it’s the anger in her eyes that captivates me.

Pushing my sodden hair from my brow, I drag it back, keeping my eyes locked on hers as students move between us ready to start the first lesson of the day.

“Whatever it is you’re playing at with Millie. I’m not going to let it happen.”

Blindly, she grabs something from her locker before kicking it shut with one of her boots—those definitely aren’t part of the All Hallows’ uniform—and takes a step toward me. Totally ignoring the stream of people who are forced to step aside for her.

“You know, for someone who apparently rules this place, you sure do spend a lot of time rocking the hobo look. What happened? Lost the key to your castle, Theodore?”

Amusement curls at her lips as anger surges through me.My fingers itch with my need to wrap them around her throat and squeeze the life out of her.

“Theo,” a sweet, irritating voice calls from somewhere down the hall that makes Raine’s spine straighten. “Oh, look at you, you’re all wet,” Keeley says the second she wraps her hand around my upper arm.

My first reaction is to rip myself from her clutches, but then I see the way Raine’s eyes narrow in frustration, I hold steady.

Leaning in closer, I brush my lips against Keeley’s ear.“Bet I’m not as wet as you.”

“Give me strength,” Raine mutters while Keeley purrs like a needy kitten at my words.

“I’m glad you found me, Kee. I’ve got a job that I think you’re going to really enjoy.”

“I’ll give you anything you need, baby.”
