When I reach the entrance, I spot a young girl huddled by the door, arms wrapped around herself, practically holding herself together. Alarm bells go off in my head as I slow my approach, taking in her skittish appearance.

Don’t get involved, I urge myself.Just keep walking.

She lifts tear-stained eyes to mine and a life’s worth of trauma rises inside me. But I push it down. Force it back into its box.

I’m not that girl anymore.

I’llneverbe that girl again.

But I can’t do it, I can’t just walk past her without saying something.

“Hey, are you o—”

Her bottom lip quivers and she darts inside the building.

Okay then.

I frown, giving a little shake of my head.

When I finally force myself to go inside, there’s no sign of her. My stomach growls and I decide to check out the communal kitchen.

I don’t expect to walk straight into someone as I enter the room.

“The fuck?” A deep voice growls. “Watch where you’re going.”

I step back to look at the boy. Man would be a better word for him. He towers over me, his eyes full of fury and fire as he glares down at me.

“Who the fuck are you?”

“Someone who belongs here more than you,” I spit, my hackles rising at the violence rolling off him.

He falters, eyes flashing with confusion. But then his icy mask slides back into place. “I don’t know you.”

“No shit.” I fold my arms over my chest, arching a brow. “Stealing from the girls’ dorm?” My narrowed gaze drops to the stash of snacks and sweets in his hands. “How original.”

“Get the fuck out of my way.”

“Not until you tell me what you’re doing with all that.”

I know boys like this.

Arrogant.

Entitled.

Spoiled.

“Move,” he barks, literally vibrating with anger. But he doesn’t scare me. Not one bit.

Why would he when I’ve been dealing with guys like him since I grew boobs. Even before then.

“Make me.”

The words detonate between us, surprise flickering over his expression.

“You don’t know who I am,” he muses.

“Should I?”
