My eyes drop from her face, focusing on her chest. As I wait for movement, I swear my own heart stops beating.

She’s breathing.

She has to be breathing.

“I can’t lose her, Elliot.” My voice cracks. “I just can’t. Not like this. Not—”

“You’re not going to lose her. Come on, get out of the way.” He physically shoves me, forcing me to back up.

“The fuck are you doing? I’m not leaving her.” I fight him, shoving him back twice as hard. But he’s expecting it.

“Bro, you need to back and let them help her,” Reese says, gripping my upper arm in an unforgiving hold and yanking me away from the car.

“Raine,” I cry. “I need to be with her.”

“She needs the paramedics,” Oak says, stepping up to my other side. “Let them do their job. Let them take care of her.”

Every single muscle is locked up with my need to fight them off and go to her. But I don’t. As much as it might hurt. I know they’re right.

She needs them more than she needs me right now.

It fucking rips me apart.

The paramedics, the police, and the firefighters everything blurs to nothing but colours and flashes of light. The sirens, people shouting, it all morphs into white noise as time seems to stand still.

But my eyes never leave her.

Even when I can only see a sliver of her bloodstained skin, I keep my focus on her. Silently begging for her to come back to me. To fight.

To fight for me.

For us.

For the future.

But unable to hear anything, any diagnosis, or updates, I have no idea how hopeful those wishes are.

At some point, the dark, heavy clouds above us can’t contain their misery any longer and the rain starts falling, soaking us through in only minutes.

“Come on. We can sit in the car,” Elliot says, trying to encourage me to move.

“No,” I state. “I’m not moving until she does.”

“You’re soaked through, Theo. We all are. She doesn’t need you getting sick. She’s going to need—”

“She needs me right here,” I snap. “I’m not fucking moving.” When he looks like he’s about to argue again, I go for the low blow. “Imagine if that were Abi. Would you willingly fucking move then, ay?” I glance over just in time to see all the blood drain from his face.“No. Exactly. If you want to fuck off and get dry, be my guest. But I am not fucking moving until she does.”

It doesn’t escape my notice that neither Reese nor Oak say anything or even attempt to move. They get it. They understand.

A warm hand lands on my shoulder. “We got you, man. Whatever you need,” Reese assures me.

Together, side by side, in the rain we stand there and watch as the roof of Vaughn’s car is cut off and the two of them are gently lifted out and placed onto gurneys.

“She’s going to get through this,” Oak whispers as we all watch the paramedic’s check the oxygen mask they’ve placed over her mouth as well as the IV they’ve put into the back of her hand.

“And what about him,” I spit, hating that I spare a second of my time to look at Vaughn. “He doesn’t deserve to walk away from this.”

“Then let’s hope he doesn’t,” Reese mutters.
