I’ve no idea how she got so lucky for her to have a social worker who seems to trust us, but I’m not knocking it.Although I think Christian and Fiona may have had a helping hand in that department.

“Do you have everything you need?” I ask, glancing around the room and searching for stray belongings.

“Yes,” she whispers.

She gets to her feet without my help and shuffles toward the door. While she might be well enough to leave, that doesn’t mean that she isn’t still suffering from the after-effects of the crash. Her body is battered and bruised. It’s going to be quite a while until she’s back in full form again.

But that’s okay, as long as she gets there eventually.

“Whoa, wait for me.”

“I’m not an invalid,” she snaps.

“I know that, sunshine. But you’re hurting. I fucking hate it. Let me get you a wheelchair.”

Without even bothering to respond to that comment, she pushes forward and shuffles through the door.

“Shit,” I hiss. Stepping up behind her, I wrap my arm around her waist.

“You don’t need to do any of this. I’m—”

“I do,” I state. “I need to do all of it and more. You’re my girl, Raine. Whatever you need, I’m here for it. Always.”

She sighs, letting her head hang, refusing to accept or believe my words.

That’s okay. She might not want to hear them now, but one day soon she will, and even better, she’ll believe them.

Slowly, we make our way to the lift but before we get there, she pauses at the sign showing what floor all the wards are on.

My heart sinks the second she begins scanning the text before her because I know what—or who—she’s looking for.

“It’s over, Raine. You don’t—”

“Intensive care is on the fourth floor.”

“Raine,” I sigh.

“I know what you think,” she whispers. “But this isn’t about you. It’s about me, Theo. And I need—” A shudder goes through her. “You just said that you’re here for—”

“I meant it. I just don’t want you in any more pain than you need to be in.”

“I need to see him, Theo. I need… closure, I guess.”

It’s selfish and ridiculous but hearing that she wants to see him, a guy who’s had such an impact on her life, a man she thought she loved once upon a time, makes something tight and painful wrap around my chest.

The only man I want her to think about is me. I want her eyes on me and no one else. It’s possessive and over the top but I can’t help it.

She’s mine.

I’m hers.

And that’s the way it’s always going to be.

“Okay,” I force out, taking a step closer to the lift with her still tucked into my side.

My heart is in my throat as we climb through the building. And I’m not the only one struggling because Raine trembles from head to toe.

I want to tell her that she doesn’t need to do this, but clearly, for some reason, she feels that she has to, and who am I to argue with her?
