“Yeah, I guess he does. In his own annoying Theo way.” Her soft laughter dies, and her expression turns sombre. “Theo said you went to see him… Vaughn, I mean. Do you… do you want to talk about it?”

Pressing my lips into a thin line, I shake my head.

“Okay. But I’m here, whenever you’re ready. And if you never want to talk about it, that’s fine too. Miss Linley will also be there. She’s glad you’re okay.”

“You talked to her about me?” I ask, surprised.

“I was worried. About you, about Theo. I know she’s an adult, but I trust her.”

“It’s good you have someone to talk to, Mills.”

“I have you too, right?”

“Yeah,” I whisper.

I can’t deny this kid.

Even if I don’t want to make any promises, she’s impossible to say no to.

“My brother will—” The door opens, and Theo appears with a tray of food. “Speak of the devil,” Millie stands. “I’m going to find the girls. Elliot promised to make me and Abi pancakes again.”

“You can stay and eat with us,” I say, unsure I’m ready to be alone with Theo again just yet.

“No, that’s okay. I’m sure my brother wants you all to himself. But I’ll come and check on you later.”

“Okay.”

“Thanks for keeping her company,” Theo says as they pass each other.

The second the door closes behind Millie, the air shifts.

“How are you feeling?” he asks me, setting the tray down on the desk.

“Honestly, I don’t know.”

He studies me as he slowly advances toward the bed. My breath gets stuck in my throat the closer he comes, until he’s right there. Looming over me.

“Hi,” he says, dropping to his knees.

“Hi.”

“I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you woke up, but I really needed to eat. And I wanted to fill everyone in.”

“It’s fine. You don’t need to be with me twenty-four seven.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Try to play this down. I want to be here. I’m going to be here.” Theo reaches for my hair, pushing it out of my face a little. “You’re a mess, sunshine.”

“Is that your idea of looking after me?” I lift a brow. “Because your bedside manner kind of sucks.”

“Do you think you can manage a shower?”

“Yeah, I think so.” Theo nods, standing. He starts pulling off his polo shirt and I frown. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going to clean you.”
