Theo says and does all the right things. He’s patient and sweet and handles me like I’m fragile glass, ready to shatter at any moment.

But I think part of me died in that accident.

A bit of my soul that I’ll never get back.

Every night, Theo pulls me into his arms and whispers that he loves me. And right then, in the moment, it feels like he’s slowly stitching me back together.

Until the morning rolls around, and I feel as bleak and lost as I did the day before.

Trudy is worried.

I’m still seventeen for another couple of weeks.

If things don’t improve, she could push the court to look at my case. I could end back up in a group home.

Miss Linley stopped by yesterday, wanting to talk. But I pretended to be sleeping. I’m not ready to be psychoanalysed. Picked and pulled apart by her.

A knock at Theo’s bedroom door, pulls me from the dark thoughts circling my mind.

I don’t answer though, hoping whoever it is will go away.

“Raine,” Abi calls. “Can I come in?”

When I don’t answer, she lets herself in.

“I’m asleep.” I roll onto my side, giving her my back.

“The girls and I wondered if you wanted to hang out?”

“Maybe another day.”

“Nope. Not going to work, not today.” Tally rounds the bed and looms over me. “We’ve let you stew in here long enough. Either you come down and spend some time with us, or we’ll camp out here. But we are having some girl time. It’s your choice.”

“I said—”

“Here or downstairs?” Conviction burns in her eyes, and I know this is one fight I won’t win.

They’ve gone easy on me, I realise that now. The Heirs and their girlfriends don’t pander to people, they bulldoze. They get what they want, when they want it. And it would seem my time is up.

“Fine, you can stay,” I relent.

“Wasn’t asking for your permission but I’m glad you came to your senses.” Her mouth twists with amusement. “You hungry? We brought snacks.”

Liv drops a grocery bag on the end of the bed. “I didn’t know what you preferred, so I got one of everything.”

“You got… why am I not surprised,” I murmur, making no move to look in the bag.

I’m not hungry.

In fact, I don’t feel much of anything these days.

“Theo and the boys are at the gym beating the crap out of each other.”

“Good for them.”

“Is that all you’ve got to say?” Liv arches her brow. “You know they work out half-naked, right? All those hard sweaty abs on display.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
