She glares at me.“I can see through your lies,Teddy,” she teases.

“Fine. I didn’t have sex in your bed, Millie. Not that you should even know what that is.”

“I’m twelve, Theo. I’m more than aware.”

“Just tell me you haven’t—”

“I said I’m twelve, not a whore. Christ. All the boys in my year are idiots anyway. The girls too, to be fair.”

My mouth opens and closes but I can’t find any words to respond to that comment.I finally settle on a muted groan of, “Good. Th-that’s good.”

“Doesn’t mean you’re getting away with not changing the sheets.”

“Already done.” I smirk. “I had new Egyptian cotton ones delivered and put on this morning.”

“And they say money doesn’t buy happiness,” Millie deadpans.

“Nope, just a comfortable bed.”Pulling my phone from my pocket, I scan through my notifications, looking for one from Raine.

“A watched kettle never boils.”

“Will you please stop being such a bloody smart-arse? I’m just reading messages from the guys.”

“No, you’re not. You’re hoping for a message from Raine. Did something happen?”

“No. Yes. I don’t know.”

“But you’re so happy.” Her brows furrow. “What did you do?”

“Why do you automatically assume I did something?”

“Because you’re a boy.”

“Brilliant,” I mutter while having another mouthful of cake while Millie’s eyes drill into me. “She told me that she was leaving.”

I regret the words the second they fall from my lips.

“What? When?” Millie’s expression falls. “She can’t leave. She belongs here with us.”

“She told me that once she’s eighteen and out of the system she’s going to disappear.”

“She can’t,” my sister repeats. “You need to do something. Give her a reason to stay.”

“That’s exactly what I told her I would do.”

“When’s her birthday? How long do you have to prove to her that she’s fallen in love with you and can’t live without you?”

There’s a light-heartedness to my sister’s words but it doesn’t stop something squeezing inside my chest.

“Millie,” I say, trying to disguise my panic, “are you a little bit of a romantic?”

“What? No. I hate people and love is for idiots,” she argues.

“Are you trying to say I’m an idiot?”

“Are you trying to say you’re in love with Raine?”

My chin drops and I trip over any answer I might have to that question.“Stop putting words in my mouth.”
