“You’ll have to wait and find out.”

Leaving All Hallows’ behind, I head toward Oxford and a place I know she’s going to love.

* * *

“Okay, maybe I should have given you more credit,” Raine announces as we walk through the entrance of the old barn and into the rustic burger joint the boys and I found last year.

It’s a vast space with an open kitchen at one end, where you can see your burgers cooking over a huge barbecue, and a live band playing in the opposite corner. All the furniture is upcycled, and nothing matches but it’s a whole vibe. And outdoor heaters throw out enough heat to keep everyone toasty even on the most bitter of winter evenings all while the scent of the flame-grilled meat floats around them.

“This place is insane.”

“And no pretentious waiter, or tiny portions in sight,” I say a little smug.

Her hand squeezes mine as we wait behind another couple to be seated.“Thank you,” she whispers, gazing up at me with her huge violet eyes.

“You’re more than welcome, sunshine. You can thank me later.”

“Table for two,” a young emo guy asks as he grabs us two menus.

“Thanks, man,” I say, wrapping my arm around my girl and following the guy toward a secluded table in the back corner of the barn.

“Oh my God, I’m so hungry,” Raine murmurs as she stares at the menu.

It’s nothing fancy.

Just really fucking good food.

“Order whatever you like,” I say, not wanting her to feel like she needs to hold back, despite the fact that I know she will.

She shakes her head as she studies what’s on offer before looking up at me.

“What?” I ask.

“Just… you. You’re… nothing like I first expected.”

“Never judge a book by its cover, sunshine.”

“Just like you did me?” she snarks.

“I guess we’re as guilty as each other.”

“I guess so,” she mutters, returning her attention to the menu.

After we’ve ordered our drinks. A cocktail for Raine and a beer for me, thanks to my very convincing fake ID, I sit back and study her as I think over the day.

“How did you do it?”

“Do what?” she asks after sipping her bright pink drink. It’s way girlier than what I was expecting her to choose but it suits her.

“Get out of the dorm without getting caught to tag our cars?”

She smirks, the naughty glint in her eyes making my cock swell beneath the table.“There’s a dead spot in the CCTV outside my window. It was really pretty easy.”

I shake my head.“Of course,” I mutter, irritated that I didn’t figure it out before.

“I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have but you were such a dickhead and—”

“It’s okay, sunshine. If anything, I’m impressed. There aren’t many people who’d have the balls to go up against us like that. I love that you’re not like any of them. You test me, challenge me. Drive me fucking crazy.”
