The waiter clears his throat, and I wonder if he knows exactly what he walked up on. “The steak and caramelised onion ciabatta is one of our more popular dishes.”

“I’ll take that please,” Theo says with an air of confidence that only an Heir can pull off. “With an extra portion of skin-on fries and the house mac and cheese. “

“And for you?” The waiter turns his attention on me, and I inhale a sharp breath, trying to compose myself.

“I’ll have the chicken Caesar salad please with a portion of garlic bread.”

“Great. I’ll get those out as soon as possible. If you need anything else just give me a wave.”

He disappears and I sag against the back of the bench, shooting Theo an irritated glare.

“You look annoyed, sunshine.” His eyes glint with mischief. “We could always sneak into the bathroom and—”

“No.”

“No?” His brow arches.

“You had your fun,” I purr. “You don’t get to touch me again until we leave.”

“Is that so?”

“Yep.” I grab my cocktail and take a large sip.

For as much as I like being with Theo, he unnerves me. It’s very distracting. And although I have no choice but to go along with things, I have to try and keep a level head.

I drop my gaze, needing a second.

It’s so easy to forget that this isn’t real.

“Hey.” His fingers slide under my jaw so he can coax my face to his. “What’s wrong?”

“N-nothing.” I force a smile. “It’s really nice here.”

“Wait a second. Does the mighty Raine Storm actually sound impressed.”

“Don’t push your luck.” I chuckle.

“Seriously, though.” Theo’s expression sobers. “You really like it? I didn’t—”

“Theo”—I grab his hand and entwine our fingers, unable to fight the pull between us—“it’s perfect.”

And it is.

It’s just a shame it’s tainted by the dark Vaughn-shaped shadow hanging over me.

“Are you nervous about the party Friday?” I ask.

“No, it’s long overdue.”

“What are—”

“I can’t wait to see your dress,” he cuts me off. “Don’t wear any underwear, I want full access to you all night.”

“Theo, you can’t say stuff like that when we’re in public.”

“Sunshine, I think we both know you’re not in charge here.” He winks at me, taking a long pull on his beer. “I wasn’t lying earlier when I said that I know what I want to eat, Raine.”

“Oh yeah?” I play along.
