“What is this place?” I ask Theo as he turns down a dark track off the main road back toward Saints Cross.

“I like to come here sometimes.” He shrugs, keeping one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on my knee as he guides the car toward what appears to be a vast lake.

“It’s beautiful,” I whisper as my eyes drink in the shimmering body of water flanked by big sprawling trees.

“Yeah. I don’t get out here as much as I used to. But when I still lived at home it was kind of my place.”

“Theo Ashworth,” I feign surprise. “Who knew you were such a romantic?”

“Nothing romantic about escaping another one of your old man’s drunken tirades, sunshine.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” He gives me a defeated smile. “We’ve all got baggage.”

Theo drives the car down to the water’s edge and parks. “Once I turn eighteen, things will be different,” he says.

“Tell me about it,” I reply, as he casts me a strange look. “What?”

“Sometimes it feels like you’re going to slip through my fingers.”

“Theo, I—”

“Don’t.” He shakes his head. “I don’t want to talk about the heavy stuff, not tonight.”

He seems so sad, so lost and vulnerable, it breaks my heart a little.

“What do you want to do then?” I ask coyly. Knowing full well what he brought me out here for. But the build-up is half the fun with Theo.

The heart-racing anticipation.

My boy is dirty and wild and a little bit dangerous, and I love it.

Except, he isn’t your boy.I ignore the little voice of warning. Out here, we can pretend. Out here, we’re just Theo and Raine, two lost souls looking for someone to guide them home.

“Come here.” He crooks his finger at me, the intensity in his eyes sending shivers down my spine.

“Theo, there’s barely room—”

“I said, come”—he reaches over and grabs me, dragging me across the centre console and into his lap—“here.”

My knees fall open as I straddle him, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Hi.” I smile at him.

“Hi.”

“This is… cosy.” My mouth twitches.

“I happen to like you on top of me. Under me. Anyway I can get you to be honest.”

Soft laughter spills from my lips. “Such a sweet talker.”

“You’d be surprised at the things I’d become for you.”

Sweeping the hair off his brow, I press a kiss to his lips. “You mentioned something about dessert earlier.”

“That I did. Not sure what I had planned is going to work in here though.” He cracks the door open.

“I’m not skinny dipping in the lake.” My brows furrow. “It’s freezing out there.”
