I’m about to go to him when another man enters the room behind him. A carbon copy of the boy I’m falling for.

Older, sure. But with those same dark eyes and chiselled features. He notices his son looking at me, but one cursory glance and Mr. Ashworth deems me unimportant as he places a hand on Theo’s shoulders and steers him away and toward one of the tables.

“You’re sitting with us,” Abi says, startling me.

“There’s a seating plan.”

“Theo didn’t tell you?”

“No, he didn’t.” I grimace, my stomach churning with apprehension. “What if I don’t have a seat?”

“You do. With us. Come on.

But when we arrive at our table—or what’s clearly the Heirs table—I realise my name card is Elliot’s plus one.

“Surprise,” he says coolly.

“You knew about this?”

“Just trust him, okay.”

“So what? I’m supposed to be your date?”

His heavy stare flicks past me to Abi and his jaw clenches. “It’s only for theatrics.”

“Theatrics, right.”

“It’s just a name card,” Abi points out. As if it matters. As if I shouldn’t care that I’m here as a nobody.

What did I expect though?

Theo to introduce me as his girlfriend? To a father he hates.

A father he’s plotting against.

“He’s not going to do anything stupid, is he?” I ask Elliot quietly while everyone chats around us.

“What do you mean?” His brows furrow.

Then it hits me. What if I’m the weapon?

What if Theo is planning to use me to get back at his father?

No, he wouldn’t do that.

He wouldn’t—

“You’re freaking out,” Elliot notes.

“I don’t know what to think.”

“I’ve known Theo a long time, Raine. And I’ve never seen him care like he does about you. Just trust him. Yeah.”

Theo takes his seat at another table with his father, Millie, and a woman I assume is Maria. There are also three other adults sitting with them.

“Oakley and Liv’s dad Christian and Reese’s mum Fiona,” Abi says. “And the other man is Elliot’s dad Johnathon Eaton.”

“I feel sick.”
