I guess it’s karma. Vaughn might have pulled my strings for the last few years, but I was complicit. I went along with him.

Now I only have to do one last job for him, and I’ll be free.

Leaning my head back against the wall, I watch Millie sleep. She’s so lucky to have Theo. He’ll never let her stray onto the wrong path. Maybe if I’d have had someone looking out for me, I wouldn’t be here now, and things would be different.

But if I’d never have come to All Hallows’, I would never have met Theo.

And I can’t regret that.

Not ever for a second.

Sometime later, I hear them arrive back at the Chapel.

After checking on Millie, I slip out of the room, and go in search of Theo. Nervous energy thrums inside of me, my heart crashing against my chest.

“You want a drink?” someone asks—Reese maybe.

Their voices grow louder as I reach the staircase.

“You should go to them.” That’s Elliot. “Mills will be—”

“She’s fine,” I say, descending the stairs. “I left her sleeping.”

Theo’s eyes immediately find mine, a violent shiver running down my spine at the darkness there. The void.

“You good?” I ask, keeping my head held high.

He gives me a small imperceptible nod.

The air crackles between us and I’m aware of the rest of them watching us. Something has changed, and it isn’t me.

Theo stands, stalking toward me like a predator. Long, angry strides until he’s right in front of me.

For a second, I don’t move. I can’t breathe as he stares at me, his anguish a living, breathing thing between us. But then he throws his arms around me and pulls me against his chest, and I realise he isn’t angry. He’s barely holding on.

He trembles as I wrap my arms around him and hug him tightly. “It’s over,” I whisper, my heart cracking.

“She’s okay?”

“She’s confused and upset but she’s okay. She’s asleep in your bed.”

He nods again, giving me his eyes. “Thank you for getting to her.”

“Of course.”

Tension radiates off him and I want nothing more than to help him relax. But not with an audience. Not while Millie is asleep upstairs, her heart breaking.

“You want to go see her?” I ask, stepping back a fraction. Trying to keep a level head.

His eyes flash with something and I know he’s thinking the same thing.

He wants me.

He wants to bury himself inside me and use me to erase the events of the night.

“Later,” I whisper, taking his hand. “She needs you.”
