If everything goes to plan.

“Have we met?” He studies me, his interested gaze brushing up my body like a thousand tiny spiders crawling over my skin.

I always hated this part the most.

“I don’t know, have we?” I flash him a coy smile, dipping my eyes.

“The party.” He snaps his fingers. “You’re friends with Theo Ashworth.”

“We go to school together, that’s all.”

The weight of the words crush me.

“School?”

“College,” I correct him. Not that I’m sure it would matter if I was still in school.

Men like Stanley Harris don’t tend to have a moral compass when it comes to seducing young girls.

Relief coasts over his expressions and I have to bite back a dry laugh. He might be relieved, but I would put money on him sticking around regardless.

“I’d remember those eyes anywhere,” he croons, leaning in a little closer.

Biles rises up my throat, the realisation that this is it—that if I do this, there’s no going back.

I knew that the second I lied to Theo. The second I punched through his chest and ripped out his heart. But this is different. That was just words, this will be…

I lock it down.

Forcing myself to a place of isolation.

Complete and utter numbness.

My time in Saints Cross was always finite.

Nothing more than a brief moment in time.

It’s my own fault for getting tangled up with Theo. For letting my guard down and letting myself believe that maybe things could be different, that maybe I could have had the happily ever after I’ve never dared to dream of.

But that wasn’t my destiny.

And he’ll get over me.

He’ll meet some rich beautiful girl who he can be proud to call his. Someone who knows how to live in his world.

Someone deserving of his love, his affection.

A true equal.

Mr. Harris watches me, his intense stare making it hard to breathe. I suck in a shaky breath, and he crooks a smile. “Don’t be nervous.” He slides a fresh drink towards me.

Hollow laughter crawls up my throat, but I trap it behind a thin smile.

I’m not nervous.

I’m broken.

And after tonight, I’ll never be the same again.
