“Rules are meant to be broken, Red. That’s where the fun lies.”

“Is that why you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Sneak into my room. Watch me sleep.”

I shake my head. “No, I don’t do that just because I’ve been told not to. I do it because I have to. Being close to you, Red. It’s an obsession.”

The air turns thick around us as we stare at each other.

“We should go,” I say. “It’s time you experienced a funfair.”

Lifting her back into her seat, I quickly rearrange myself before pushing the door open and stepping out. I suck in a deep breath of fresh air in the hope that it’ll squash my need to back her up against the side of my car and take her for anyone who cares to watch.

I count to five, praying that it’s enough before I walk around to her side and open her door.

As I reach for her hand and help her out, my eyes run over every inch of her. She looks so much more put together than I feel right now.

“You’re beautiful,” I whisper, as I drag her into my body.

“Elliot,” she breathes.

“I know you hate it but I’m going to keep telling you what I think until you get used to taking a compliment, Red.”

She shakes her head, but I ignore her, taking her hand and tugging her toward the entrance.

Her eyes are wide as she looks around at all the rides and stalls.

“Where to first?” I ask, half expecting her to choose all the tame rides. So when her eyes move to the tallest ride here, I couldn’t be more surprised.

“That one,” she says, her eyes crawling up the mega drop to the people currently hanging at the top.

“Yeah?” I ask.

“You wanted to give me a thrill, right?”

I laugh, pulling her into my body and pressing my lips to the top of her head.“You’ve no idea, Red. No fucking idea.”

She shrieks when I suddenly release her and all but run toward the ride.

Over the next two hours, we hit up every single ride. Watching her scream with delight as she flies through the air is one of my new favourite things. There is so much life in her eyes, so much excitement. It’s addictive. It’s all I can do to rip my eyes off her and experience all of this for myself.

“Come on,” I say, tugging her toward the Haunted House where we turn the corner and find no queue.

“Uh… I’m not sure?—”

“Red,” I tease. “You’re not scared, are you?”

She hesitates. “N-no.’

“Aw, baby. I’ll look after you. No scary ghosts or ghouls are going to get my girl.”

Her breath catches at my words and my heart jumps into my throat as I realise what I said.

I remember all too well the things I said to her on that bench by the church.

I want this.
