“It’s not forever, I promise. I just need some time to figure out?—”

“I know.”

We stare at each other in the darkness. And I wonder if this is the life we’re destined for. To always remain concealed in shadows and half-light. Never truly able to step into the light.

I’ve always felt safer there, more at ease. Something tells me Elliot has too.

Maybe it is where we belong, after all.

But how will that work if we can never let our relationship be public? If we can never tell our friends or his family?

What kind of life is that?

Dread churns in my stomach as every doubt and insecurity I’ve ever had starts to rise inside me like a tidal wave.

“I want this,” he says roughly, leaning over to palm my cheek. I turn into his touch, both loving and hating the way his fingers brush my scars. “I want you.”

I nod, not trusting myself to talk.

“Words, Red. I need you to use your words. Tell me you’re in this with me.”

“I… I’m in.”

As if I ever had a choice.

Before she died, my mum always told me that one day I’d meet a boy who would steal my heart.

I just didn’t expect him to be an Heir.

But maybe that’s always been my fate. Betrothed to one Heir, falling for another.

I smile to myself.

“What?” Elliot frowns in that super serious way of his.

“Nothing. Do you”—I hesitate—“have to go or can you come in for a little bit?”

“No, I can come in for a—” The blare of his phone cuts through the tension swirling around us. “Shit,” he says, checking the screen. “It’s my brother.”

“You should answer it.” I slouch back in my seat, my chest tightening.

“Scott, yeah.” Elliot drags a hand over his jaw. “What? Now? Yeah… No, okay. Fine. I said fine didn’t I.” He hangs up and exhales out a frustrated breath.

“Is there a problem?”

“I have to go.”

“Oh, okay.”

“I’m sorry?—”

“No, it’s fine. You should go. I have some homework to do anyway.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

“At school. Where we’ll pretend we’re not… You know?”

“Abi, I don’t?—”
