The second he steps out of the Chapel, I slam the door behind us and take off toward the school.

His eyes burn into my back, but my focus isn’t on him as I pull my phone free and return Millie’s call.

“What’s wrong?” I bark without any kind of greeting.

“Uh…”

“Spit it out, Mills. You haven’t been blowing up my phone for fun.”

“Yeah. I know. I just… I don’t know if…”

“Millie,” I growl.

“Crap. Yeah. So… some of the girls saw Abigail sneaking down to the kitchen last night for first aid supplies.”

“What? Why?” I bark, my feet moving faster.

“I don’t know. No one asked.”

“But—”

“Kara told me you told her to tell you if she saw or heard anything. That’s all I know.”

“So why are you telling me, and she isn’t?” This is exactly what I wanted to avoid, dragging Millie into my bullshit when she’s already been through enough.

“I don’t know, I guess she’s scared of you or something. Scared what you might do if…”

“If what, Mills?”

“If Abi hurt herself on her watch.”

“Shit,” I hiss, dread sitting heavy in my stomach. “I’m coming to check on her now,” I explain.

“I’m sure she’s fine. She probably just?—”

“Call me if you hear anything else, yeah?”

“Of course.”

“Thank you, Mills,” I say before hanging up and digging the dorm master key from my bag.

I have the door open only a second later and I’m heading toward Abigail’s room. It’s a route I’ve taken numerous times in the past few days. But something feels different this time.

I don’t hesitate when I get to her door, instead, I unlock it and throw it open. Her room is still in darkness, and once again it’s empty. But I know where she is this time.

Storming toward the closed bathroom door, I don’t bother warning her that I’m coming.

I don’t give a shit if she’s mid-pee.

The door swings open, revealing the girl I’ve come for sitting with her back against her wall and her bare, pale legs spread out in front of her.

Any other day, the sight of so much of her skin on display when she usually hides would be enough to stop me in my tracks.

But not today.

It’s the sight of the bright red blood running down her thigh and dripping on the floor that makes my heart stop.

“Abigail,” I growl dangerously.
