Friends.

He might as well have driven a stake through my already broken heart.

Friends.

But even that word is a lie. Because Elliot and I are not friends.

We never were.

He watches me. The way a person might watch a cornered animal. Cautious. Hesitant.

Scared.

“Please stop looking at me like that,” I quietly seethe.

“Like what?”

“Like you pity me.”

“Fuck, Abi, that’s not… You scared me today.”

“What?”

“When I found you like that, you scared me. I’m not used to that… that feeling.”

“You weren’t supposed to find me.” My voice is barely a whisper.

“Just stay here a while. Until the girls get back. Until you’re in a better headspace. Can you do that for me?”

“Where will you stay?” I ask, glancing round his room.

It’s not the first time I’ve been in here and I’m dreadfully aware of the fact that I’m one of the very few girls who’ve ever seen inside Elliot Eaton’s inner sanctuary.

I thought it meant something then.

I know different now.

“I’ll figure something out.” He shrugs.

“I can’t stay here,” I reiterate, although it sounds less convincing this time. Because the truth is, the thought of going back to my dorm room alone terrifies me.

“Have you eaten today?”

“What?” I stare blankly at him.

“I’ll get you something. Make yourself at home.” Elliot marches out of the room without a backward glance and I stand there, wishing things were different.

Wishing I was different.

My eyes flutter open only to be met with darkness. I push up onto my elbow and scan the room.

Elliot’s room.

A sliver of moonlight illuminates the place, casting shadows around the functional, clean, and tidy space.

After bringing me a sandwich and a packet of crisps, he sat and watched me eat. I didn’t like it. But I was tired. Bone-deep exhausted.
