What happened in my dorm room bathroom is my business. Not his. I don’t owe him anything.

A ripple goes through the air, fuelled by the anger bleeding from him. But to my surprise, Elliot backs down with a small, pissed off nod.

My brows furrow as two emotions war inside me. Relief… and disappointment.

God, I’m a mess.

I shouldn’t want his help.

Idon’twant it.

“There’s more if you want it?”

“No, I’m okay.”

“I need to go out today,” he says. “Will you be?—”

“I’m quite capable of looking after myself.”

He pins me with an accusatory look that makes me shrink where I sit.

Damn him.

I guess I walked into that one.

“I’ll be fine.”

“I can ask Millie?—”

“Do not finish that sentence.” I have nothing against Theo’s younger sister. In fact, I like Millie. But I don’t need a babysitter. Especially one, five years younger than me.

“Fine.” His jaw clenches. “If you need me, I’ll have my phone on me.”

“Like I said, I’ll be fine.”

Appetite gone, I push the plate away and slide off the stool. “I’m going to lie down.”

“You can stay down here. Hang out, watch TV…”

“I’m tired.”

“I don’t know how long I’ll be,” he calls after me as I head for the staircase.

I lift my hand in a small wave, acknowledging him but not really acknowledging. Because what is there to say?

I’m not his responsibility.

I’m not his anything.

And when his best friends get back tomorrow, I’m sure that will become even more painfully obvious than it is now.

Ispend the day hiding in Elliot’s room.

True to his word, he’s gone for hours. By the time I hear him arrive back the sun has sunk behind the perimeter of trees circling the Chapel.

Part of me doesn’t expect him to come straight to check on me. But a small part I’ve tried to hide, to bury, isn’t all that surprised when his bedroom door flies open, and he slips inside.
