If I had a future that we could carve out together.

But none of that is my reality.

My future is set and my family… Well, the less said about them the better.

But if I could have it just for a little while?

Pretend.

Forget about everything that is wrong with my world and focus on the little bit of light I have right now.

“Can we call a truce?” I ask, making her tense again.

“A truce?” she questions.

“Yeah. No fighting or bickering. Can we just… hang out?”

“You… you want to hang out with me?”

“Yeah, Red. Why is that so hard to understand?”

“I… I don’t know.”

“We hang out all the time,” I reason.

“As a group.”

“We broke into the office and stole Raine’s file together. That was hanging out.”

She laughs. It’s like music to my ears.

“We didn’t break in,” I point out. “You had a key.”

“Yeah, well. We still shouldn’t have been there.”

“Meh, don’t you know who I am?” I tease, cringing as the words spill from my lips.

So much for forgetting who I am.

“Yeah, Elliot. I’m more than aware,” she says sadly, making me feel like an even bigger dick for the comment.

Her pain ripples through the air, reminding me of why she needs the distraction as much as I do.

“What did you want to do?” I ask.

She shrugs. “I don’t know.”

“Movie?” I ask, mentioning the first thing that comes into my head.

“Uh… sure.”

“I could order us takeout. We can lock ourselves away and just chill.”

Finally, she moves, flipping over in my arms. Her breath catches when she discovers that I’m shirtless. Her weary gaze locks on my bare skin for a few seconds before she eventually looks up.

Her eyes are still dark, ringed with shadows. I might be imagining it, but I swear there is more to the darkness than just sadness.

Desire shoots through me and my eyes drop to her parted lips.My fingers clench around her waist, my need to pull her even closer is almost too much to ignore.
