With a frustrated shake of my head, I grip my satchel strap and quicken my pace toward my dorm building.

“Abi, wait up,” someone calls after me, and dread pools in my stomach. “Abiga?—”

“Hi.” I whirl on Millie.

“Hi,” she says, a little breathless as if she’s been running.

“Were you following me?”

“What? No. I saw you and thought we could talk.”

Talk.

She thinks I want to talk.

A flash of guilt goes through me. She’s Theo’s little sister and she’s had it tough too. We have more in common than most, I guess.

Realisation dawns on me. “Did Theo and Raine put you up to this?” I ask.

“What?”

“Talking to me? I don’t need a babysitter, Millie.”

Hurt flashes in her eyes. “I… That’s not… We’re all worried, Abi,” she admits.

“I’m fine.”

Sympathy fills her expression. “I’ve said that a lot myself over the years. Doesn’t make it any truer.”

“Please don’t do that. I don’t want to talk. I don’t want to bond over our trauma. I don’t?—”

“Okay, I get it. You don’t want to deal with it yet. There’s no textbook for these kinds of things. I just thought you might want a friend. A friend who isn’t in the inner circle.” The corner of her mouth tips a little.

“You’re Theo’s sister,” I scoff. “I think that makes you part of the inner circle whether you want to be or not.”

“So not true and you know it.”

My heart tumbles at her words—the truth behind them.

“Crap, Abi, I didn’t mean?—”

“It’s fine,” I rush out, wanting this conversation to be over. “I have a lot of coursework to finish, so I need to go.”

“Just promise me you won’t do anything silly. I know it hurts right now but it won’t hurt this much forever.”

With a small nod, I move ahead of her and duck into the building, feeling the jaws of shame nip at my heels.

Does she know what I did?

Did Elliot tell her?

Or maybe he told his friends and Theo told Millie.

I’d like to think he didn’t. After all, I made him promise that he wouldn’t. But they’re the Heirs. They don’t keep secrets.

At least, they aren’t supposed to.

It’s all part of their unbreakable bond. The united front they rule All Hallows’ with.
