Of course I had.

There wasn’t a detail I’d forgotten about her.

“And forget the kind of milkshake you ordered at the diner? Come on.”

She squeezed my hand and said to Klark, “I can’t wait to try it. All of it, not just the dessert. And whatever it is that you’re making, it smells delicious.”

“Trout and halibut piccata with sautéed broccoli rabe and crispy rosemary potatoes,” he responded. “That’s for the main course. I’m working on something new and extra special for the appetizer.”

“I’m drooling,” Brooklyn replied to him.

Klark looked at me and said, “I’ll cook for her anytime.”

I chuckled. “The champagne has been iced?”

“On the patio, with two flutes, waiting for you, buddy.”

“Appreciate it,” I said, and my hand went to the base of Brooklyn’s back. “Let me know when you’re ready for us.”

I led her through the rest of the kitchen and into the living room out the sliding glass door. “Drinks first, then dinner and dessert. Followed by a dip in that”—I pointed at the hot tub that was on the edge of my infinity pool—“once the sun sets. Seeing LA at night is an entirely different feel and experience than it is during the day. Out here, under the black sky, you’ll have one hell of a view.”

“I can’t wait. But I didn’t bring a bathing suit.”

I smiled as we took a seat on one of the couches, and I held her against my side. “I wouldn’t let you wear one even if you did.”

“If we’re going to be naked, does that mean you’re going to let me touch you tonight?” She drew her bottom lip into her mouth, her teeth holding it tightly.

I could feel the change between us. I could see things starting to move forward.

But today had been a big day for her, and I didn’t want her to feel muddy with the connection between me and Spade Hotels. What we had was one thing. The employment she was going to be offered tomorrow was something entirely different. I didn’t want her to feel pressure from either entity.

So, if that meant we needed to continue taking things slow until she figured that out and all I got to taste was her lips, I was fine with that.

“Is that what you want?”

She nodded. “Yes. More than anything.”

The bottle of champagne was on the table in front of us, the cork already out. I poured some into the two glasses and gave one to her, clinking mine against hers.

“Then, it’s going to be one hell of a memorable night.”

Jo

Things went great with Brooklyn. I ADORE her. Never thought I’d see my big cousin settle down, but she’s a good one and the right one. Perfect pick.

Me

Did you mention anything about who’s managing the new team?

Jo

Not a word, and she didn’t ask.

Me

The offer letter is going out tomorrow, yeah?
