Without missing a beat, he begins tugging at the ropes that are binding my hands and feet to the table.

My muscles scream with every movement and the second my arms are freed, my legs give out and I collapse to the floor.

“Oh fuck,” JD barks, rushing around the table to me.

Everything is a blur as warm arms sweep under my body and lift me up.

“I’ve got you, Dove. I’ve got you and I’m never letting you go again.”

Staring up at him, I’m barely able to make out his features through the tears.

My body trembles as I continue to fight against the cold.

“Reid?” JD calls. “We need to go.”

A deep grunt fills the air, forcing me to rip my stare from JD in favor of where Reid and Mav are.

“I’m going to need a little help here,” Reid confesses.

The moment my eyes drop to the man at his feet, my entire world falls from beneath me.

“MAV,” I scream. “MAV.” But he doesn’t move. He doesn’t do anything. “Help him. Please, Reid. Do something.”

“I-I—” JD stutters, holding me tightly to his chest.

“Put her in the car then come back and help me,” Reid demands.

“I can’t just leave—”

“Please,” I whimper. “I need him. Please.”

“Fuck. Fuck,” he barks before spinning us around and practically running from the building.

The second we emerge from the building, the heat of the sun licks my skin and I crumble once more.

JD’s hold tightens to the point it hurts, but I can’t stop him. It feels too good. His strength, his warmth.

It’s everything.

Long before I’m ready to let him go, JD’s arms loosen and I’m lowered to a seat.

“Here,” he says, dragging his long-sleeved shirt from his body and tugging it over my head. “I’ll be right back.” His warm palm cups my cheek before he lowers down, pressing his brow to mine. “Everything is going to be okay. I p-promise.” The way his voice cracks on that final word sends panic rushing through me.

“Help him, Julian. Please. I can’t lose him.”

“You won’t, baby. You won’t.”

He presses a kiss to my forehead and then backs away from me.

I reach out, but I can’t get to him.

He’s too far away. Just like every time someone tries to rescue me from one of my nightmares.

I get the taste of relief, only for it to be snatched away.

It’s cruel.

So fucking cruel.
