No matter how much Alana and Mav need him right now, we can’t risk the fact he might be followed out of Harrow Creek.

Doc might be on our side, but we know all too well that Victor likes to play dirty. And the second he discovers we’ve taken his prisoners back, he’s going to lose his shit.

“When is—”

“Aubrey is meeting us there. I don’t know about her medic.”

I glance back at Mav again.

“He’s going to be okay,” Reid assures me. He looks over, feeling my stare before following it up with, “there isn’t any other option.”

There’s a part of me that wants to tease him about going from enemies to best friends, but I swallow it down. Things are too tragic right now for even me to start cracking jokes.

Reaching out, I lower the sun visor, cutting off the fall sun as it sinks toward the horizon.

Any other time, I might enjoy watching the sunset, especially with my girl in my arms. Resting my head back, I close my eyes and try to picture something different. I think about the secluded cabin in the woods I always picture when I need an escape. I think of brisk air, open fires and bubbling, steaming hot tubs.

I lose myself in thoughts of being cuddled up wearing nothing but a soft blanket in front of the fire with my girl. We’d have a thick rug beneath us and I’d make love to her right then and there with the flame warming our skin.

It would be perfect.

I’m dragged from the fantasy when a deep groan comes from behind me.

“We’ve got you, Mav,” I say, needing to reassure him that everything is okay. “We’ve got Alana too. You’re safe now.”

He doesn’t say anything or give us any kind of sign that he heard me. But at least we know he’s alive.

“We’re nearly there,” Reid confirms.

By the time he pulls up to a big house in the middle of nowhere in Hazard Grove territory, the sun has set, leaving us with only the Charger’s headlights and the moon to guide our way.

“Go take her in first then we’ll come back for Mav.”

Nodding, I throw the door open and put everything I have into standing with Alana in my arms.

Reid was right to be concerned about me doing this earlier. Although, it’s not my mental health that’s suffering, not yet at least, the adrenaline that’s pumping through my veins is keeping that at bay right now, but the effects of my stupid actions are making me slow and weak.

I need to be better for Alana and Mav. They deserve to have me fully fit and fighting for them right now.

My muscles ache and my legs tremble as I climb the porch steps that will lead me to the front door.

I’m almost there when it opens, making my heart jump into my throat.

“The fuck?” I hiss when a tall, slim body emerges. “Do you get a kick out of jumping out of dark shadows?”

Aubrey smirks at me. It’s all the answer I need.

“Brilliant. Did you want to get out of the way?”

Rolling her eyes at me, she steps aside, pointing toward the living room, so I can put Alana down.

She hasn’t so much as moved since I returned to the car and lifted her onto my lap just over an hour ago, so it startles me when she whispers, “No,” and wraps her arms around my neck, refusing to let me go.

It breaks my already tattered heart.

“Dove,” I breathe. “Trust me, I don’t want to let go, but I need to help Mav.”

A quiet whimper spills from her lips the second I mention Mav and she reluctantly drops her arms.
