I’ve met her a few times over the years, but we’ve never formed a friendship like her and Reid did the first time they met.

I know why too, I’m just too chicken shit to admit it.

Something hot and ugly bubbles just under my skin as I study her.

She’s beautiful. Her long dark hair hangs to her waist. She has large almond-shaped eyes that are almost as dark as her locks.

I always thought of her as Reid’s perfect woman. Was convinced that one day he’d realize it too and then he’d be gone, chasing her across the country on whatever job she was on and leaving me behind.

It never happened though.

And as the man in question steps into the room with a certain blonde draped over his arms, I start to understand why he never did.

Maybe she isn’t his perfect woman after all…

Without saying a word, he lowers Alana onto my lap and takes a step back.

Our eyes collide and a silent conversation passes between us.

I promised you I’d get her back for you.

Shifting her, I wrap my arm around her and press my lips to her temple.

“You’re safe now, baby. We’ve got you.”

My heart shatters as she nuzzles against my chest, curling into me and allowing me to protect her.

“You three are in for a world of fucking pain with this situation, you do know that, right?”

“Do you have any kind of filter?” I snap back, aware that I never answered her question about my bandage earlier.

“No. I’d rather just get the answer I want. Oh, Jude is here,” she says after checking her watch.

With a flounce that is way girlier than I was expecting, she disappears from the room and then runs down the stairs.

"Be nice,” Reid warns.

“What?” I ask innocently. “I’m always nice. She just—”

“Doesn’t beat around the bush?”

“Something like that.”

When Reid first came up with the idea of dragging Aubrey into this mess, I thought he’d lost his mind. After years of thinking he was secretly hot for her, I really didn’t see him willingly putting her in a position to have to fuck Victor. But then I saw him with Alana and I discovered my mistake.

He never wanted Aubrey.

I guess on paper they might appear to be the perfect couple. But life isn’t that easy. And let’s be honest. They’re both cold-blooded murderers. There’s no way they’d survive a relationship.

In only minutes, she’s back, a nerdy-looking guy trailing behind her.

If I didn’t know better, I’d expect him to pull out a laptop and start tapping away like Ellis, but when he lifts his arm, I find a bag not all that different from Doc’s hanging from his fingers.

“Jude, this is Reid Harris, Julian Dempsey.” Her eyes narrow on mine as my jaw ticks with annoyance. She knows full well that I don’t introduce myself to anyone with my full name. “Maverick Murray and his wife,” she adds, digging that knife a little deeper as she nods at the woman curled up on my lap. “Alana. As far as we know, this is the extent of Maverick’s wounds. Alana seems better, but we think there might be some hidden trauma.”

Jude nods and stalks closer to Mav.

“Has he been conscious at all?” he asks, studying his wounds.
