Alana gasps, and my face heats with JD’s stare, but I don’t look at either of them. My attention remains on the man I’ve spent my life despising.

Yes, he’s Victor’s son. But I’m quickly learning that everything else I thought about him was bullshit I told myself. Okay, so he definitely is an arrogant son of a bitch, but then so am I, to a point.

Maybe Alana was right. Maybe we always clashed because we’re so similar.

Whatever it was, it’s time to put it behind us.

There are bigger things to deal with than our history.

“Thank you,” I croak out, my voice is rough as fuck.

Reid’s jaw ticks, but it’s not with anger. Surprise, maybe.

It takes a moment for him to recover, but when he does, he takes a step forward and slides his hand into mine.

He nods, accepting my words, although he doesn’t say any of his own.

“Okay, now I really need to piss.”

JD chuckles as I drop my hand and allow him and Alana to help me to the bathroom.

Honestly, I could probably do it alone, but also, I don’t want to.

Maybe this teamwork thing won’t be so bad after all.

ALANA

After JD and I helped Mav to the bathroom, he was on the verge of passing out again, and the second we got him back to bed, he was gone.

Concern for him weighed heavy on my chest, but deep down, I knew he would be okay.

No one said anything about the state of him or what went down between him and Reid, but it was obvious that we were all thinking about it.

Not long after, Reid made his excuses and disappeared while JD and I curled up on the couch and watched over Mav.

I was desperate to continue what we started outside, to get out of my head and focus on something more positive than watching my husband suffer, but neither of us attempted to do so.

So, instead, we just held each other close and absorbed each other’s strength.

We both had questions, many questions, but none of them escaped, and eventually, we both fell asleep together.

It’s easy to think that Mav is the only one healing, seeing as he’s the one with the worst of the wounds, but we’ve all been through it recently. We all need to rest, to recover, and to be ready for the battle that waits for us on the other side.

“Shit. Did that hurt?” I ask when Mav hisses in pain as I attempt to give him a wash and clean the dried blood and dirt from his skin.

He wanted a bath, but the three of us point-blank refused. The last thing we need is his back getting infected. So for now, he’s going to have to put up with my version of a sponge bath.

“You’re fine, Doll. You’re the best nurse I’ve ever had,” he says, his eyes rolling down my body, causing tingles to erupt.

The way he looks at me, I might as well be naked.

“I’m not sure about that,” I mutter.

“I do. When you were at Reid’s, Sheila had to do it. She definitely didn’t have your touch,” he confesses with a smirk.

“I should hope not.” I gasp. “Every time I did that after your fights, all I wanted to do was touch you,” I confess, sliding my hand up his thigh, stopping just before I touch anything I shouldn’t, given his current condition.
