ALANA

JD’s plans didn’t exactly play out because after we’d all stuffed our faces with Reid’s incredible breakfast, the burner phone Aubrey gave him started ringing and he disappeared from the kitchen and locked himself in a room I was yet to explore.

Something told me it was an office. An office filled with books, maybe.

I’m yet to get to the bottom of his out-of-character collection in his own library, but I’m confident that I’ll get there.

All of us still have a lot to learn about each other, but there is time. Or at least, I hope there is.

I guess that all really depends on how all of this ends.

All we can do is hope that it plays out as we want and that the Hawks who are currently living out their last few days aren’t the ones under this roof.

With Reid occupied, I forced Mav to go and find somewhere to rest. He was adamant that he wasn’t returning to the bedroom until it was actually time to sleep, so he shuffled off toward the living room.

Just seeing him in there made my blood heat as memories assaulted my brain.

And while he rested, JD and I cleaned up.

Okay, so when I say cleaned up, I mostly mean that we made more of a mess than we started with.

By the time we joined Mav, who was blankly staring at the TV while the news channel played, my tank was soaked and see-through, and JD still had bubbles clinging to his chest.

JD tucked himself on to the end of the couch where Mav had stretched out, keeping his back away from the cushions and I snuggled myself in front of him.

I was barely on the couch, but with Mav’s arm around my waist, I was confident that I wasn’t going to hit the floor anytime soon.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for Mav to fall asleep. He might like to try to pretend that everything is okay, but we can all see that he's struggling. Hell, I’m struggling and I didn’t go through half of what he did.

Before long, the excitement of the events around the world ensures that all three of us drift off to sleep.

While it might be frustrating that we’re out of action, I can also appreciate that we needed this time away from home to figure everything out.

I’ve no idea how long I’m out for, but when I come to, it’s to the sensation of someone drawing patterns on my ankle.

Blinking to clear my vision, I find JD at the end of the couch where he fell asleep, staring down at my feet as if they hold the answers to all the world’s problems.

“Hey,” I whisper, letting him know that I’m awake. “You okay?”

Sucking in a breath, he glances up. First at me and then Mav, who’s sleeping peacefully behind me.

“Yeah,” he lies.

Panic hits me like a truck.

“Did you take your meds?” I blurt, chastising myself for not checking sooner.

A sad laugh falls from his lips.

“Don’t worry, little dove. Big Man wouldn’t let me forget. He’s like a dog with a bone.”

“Good,” I state, relieved that one of us has managed to keep their head in all this. I guess there is a reason he’s the boss after all.

Letting his eyes drop again, my heart aches for the pain that radiates from him.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I offer.

I may have pieced a few things together about what happened, but I don’t know any details. Reid kept those to himself, and rightly so. But I’m desperate to know whatever JD will allow me and to try and help in any way I can.
