“This situation with Victor,” she finishes for me. “I’m kinda hoping after what you just said that we’re good, at least on some level.”

“Yeah, babe. We’re good. Wouldn’t be here right now fulfilling my promise to you if we weren’t.”

“Good. That’s good. But—”

“Honestly, I don’t know,” I confess. “My biggest priority right now is keeping you out of harm’s way. I know Reid’s plan, but I don’t know when everything is going to play out.”

“But if Victor knows that we were there then—”

“Yeah, it’s probably going to be sooner than later.”

“It’s going to be messy, isn’t it?” she asks hesitantly.

“It’s the Hawks, of course it’s going to be messy. We just have to hope that the ones spilling the blood are the right ones.”

“You’re on Reid’s side.” She smirks. “Who’d have thunk it?”

“If I knew then what I know now, things could have been very different, Doll.”

“Aw, you made friends,” she teases.

I can’t help but scoff. “That might be pushing it a bit.”

“You spent days under the same roof and didn’t kill each other.”

“There’s a bigger enemy at play than Reid. And…” I start before swallowing roughly. “Maybe he isn’t quite as bad as I always convinced myself he was.”

Alana’s body trembles with a laugh.

“You two are as bad as each other. So we’re just hanging out in paradise until we think it might be safe to return?”

“Something like that,” I agree.

“How will we know when it’s safe?” she asks, looking up at me with her large blue eyes that always draw me in and hold me captive.

“You want to go back?” I ask. Honestly, I assumed she would. Despite all our plans to put an end to Victor and the men who hurt her and then run away into the sunset. Everything has changed in the past two weeks.

“Do you?”

“Doll,” I sigh, abandoning our mugs on the decking and repositioning us so we’re lying across the swing seat, “I want whatever you want.”

“Then I guess we’ll figure it out together, yeah?”

“Sounds perfect,” I whisper, pressing a kiss to the side of her neck, sending goose bumps racing over her skin.

“This is nice.”

“Yeah,” I say, sliding my arm around her waist and tucking my hand beneath her hoodie, something I never would have done before all of this. “It really is.”

“Just so you know,” she says quietly. “I’m yours. And… I want everything with you. Everything.”

It’s not until I wake up with the fall sun burning my face that I realize she’s gone.

My heart jumps into my throat as I frantically push myself up and call for her.

But there’s no response.
