He wants to know everything, but at the same time, he’s terrified.

I get it. I really do. I feel the same.

Everything about the last two weeks of my life has been a headfuck of emotions. Most bad, but some good. So freaking good.

“You… you care about him, don’t you?” he asks hesitantly.

My heart knots and my chest tightens as I think about the man in question and everything we’ve been through. “Not as much as I care about you,” I counter.

“Babe, that’s not what I’m questioning,” he assures me. “This,” he says, lifting our joined hands and dropping a kiss on my knuckles, “Us. It’s not in question.”

The second my eyes find his, butterflies take flight in my belly.

‘I love you,’ I mouth.

“I love you too. But I need to know what happened back there. What really happened.”

I nod. I knew that I wouldn’t get away without giving him the dark and dirty details, but I was hoping to put it off as long as possible.

“Shall we sit somewhere a little more comfortable?” I suggest.

His eyes alight with mischief.

“What are you thinking, Maverick Murray?”

“Finish that and you’ll find out.”

Pushing my plate aside, I hop to my feet.

“I’m done.”

“Alana,” he warns, noticing that I’ve only eaten half my sandwich.

“I’m fine. Honestly.”

His face twists in concern and when he looks down at my body hiding behind his shirt, I know it’s because of the weight I’ve lost.

Reid might have fed me well once I emerged from the basement, but stress has stopped me from eating full portions. And right now is no different.

“I’ll have something else later,” I promise, hoping to squash the overprotective caveman I can see emerging.

“Okay, grab your drink,” he says before pouring himself another and then leading me outside.

“Ah, I think I like this plan,” I muse when he turns toward the hot tub. “But I don’t have a suit.”

He chuckles as he places our drinks on a small shelf. “What a shame. Arms up,” he says before dragging his shirt up my body, leaving me bare for him. “Yeah,” he muses before slapping me on the ass and urging me to get in. “Real fucking shame.”

“Oh God.” I moan as I step into the warm water, my muscles instantly relaxing, just like when I sank into that bath he ran for me this morning.

“Keep that shit up and there won’t be much talking happening in here,” he warns, before dropping his shorts and significantly improving my view, which is already pretty spectacular as the sun sinks toward the horizon over the ocean.

“I don’t have a problem with that,” I muse, my eyes locked on his rippling muscles and shifting ink as he lowers himself opposite me.

He’s too far away for my liking, but only seconds later, his legs tangle with mine under the water, giving me the connection I need.

“So, where were we?” he prompts.

“So much for a nice relaxing soak,” I mutter under my breath, making him smirk.
