Fuck. I can’t even remember.

“Drought still hanging on, huh? You should just fuck Al—”

“Don’t finish that sentence,” I warn.

“Why the fuck aren’t they checking on J?”

“Because I can’t contact them. Their cells are in my safe and—”

Ez’s laugh cuts off my explanation. “So you still don’t trust them, then.”

“That’s not—”

“Final call for—”

Shit.

“I’m getting on a plane,” I mutter, grabbing my bag and throwing it over my shoulder. “You’re gonna need to—”

“Okay, I’m pulling through the gates now,” he says, and I happily fall silent as I wait for what he’s about to find.

“Everything is dark. That’s good. Right?” I don’t say anything. “Or not,” he mutters.

My heart is in my throat as I hand over my boarding pass and wait for Ez to say something.

“It’s quiet. He’s probably asleep.”

“Go check, please.”

Ez falls silent as I make my way down the tunnel to the plane.

Glancing behind me, I notice that I’m the last to board, and when I step onto the plane, I see everyone is already seated and ready to go.

“Sir?” a flight attendant says, gesturing me toward the first-class seats. “We’re ready to depart.”

Following her orders, I find my seat and fall into it.

“You still there?” I growl.

“Yeah. Just heading up now.”

The speakers on the plane crackle before the captain welcomes us onboard and runs through all the things I don’t give a shit about.

The doors are closed, and out the window, I get my last glimpses of Mexico.

“Sir, you’re going to need to hang up,” the attendant says politely.

“Yeah, I will, I just… Ez, talk to me.”

“Opening his door now.”

“Sir, this is serious, you need to—” but her warning is drowned out by Ez’s voice as it booms through my speaker.

“Oh fuck. JD,” he bellows. “JD, shit. Talk to me.”

My stomach bottoms out hearing the fear in my brother’s voice.

“Ez, what’s happening?” I yell, ensuring all attention turns on me.
