“Probably no one. Kids, maybe,” I reason.

We’re in the middle of nowhere, but I don’t know for a fact that there aren’t other cabins in walking distance.

“Mav?” she whispers again, climbing off the chair and coming around the counter to me.

“It’s fine. I’ll grab a gun and go—”

The knock comes again, this time harder and more demanding.

“Or we should go out the back?” she suggests.

“Babe,” I say, taking both of her hands in mine. I search her eyes, desperately trying to dig up something reassuring to say. “No one knows we’re here. There is no way to track us either. The car was untraceable, we have nothing on us.”

What I really want to tell her is that if it’s Victor, or any of his men, then they’ll have the place surrounded. There will be no easy way to get out.

She nods, but I’m not sure she really believes a word of it.

“Ignore it?” she tries, but the knock comes again.

Whoever it is, they’re not going away.

“It’ll be fine.”

Leaving her with her arms wrapped around herself protectively, I grab the gun I stashed in a unit by the front door. After releasing the safety, I hide it behind my back and reach for the handle, praying that I’m not about to face reality.

REID

By the time the flight attendant opened the doors to let us off, I was like a barely-restrained bull. They knew it too and allowed me off the plane before everyone else.

With my phone pinned to my ear, I raced through the airport.

But Ezra didn’t answer.

The only time I was forced to lower it was through security, but then it was only for a split second while my ID was checked.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck,” I bark as I close in on my car.

Logically, I know he’s not ignoring me on purpose. Ez might be a bit of an idiot, but he’s not cruel. He’s not our father. None of us are.

Even our littlest brother has a couple of redeeming qualities if you look hard enough.

Every muscle in my body is pulled tight as I race toward home. I go through every light without stopping and break every speed limit. But I don’t give a shit. I need to get there.

“Fucking finally,” I bark when Ezra answers yet another call.

“Sorry, sorry, I left my cell downstairs while I—”

“Is he okay?” I bark, not giving a shit about what he’s done with his fucking cell that stopped him from answering me.

“I… uh… Doc hasn’t said much. I think he’s waiting for you. J’s lost a lot of blood. Doc has patched him up and sedated him.”

That doesn’t sound good.

My grip on the wheel tightens and I press the gas harder.

I need to be there.
