This time, I’m the one to nod. I’m pretty sure that at this point, there’s nothing I can say that wouldn’t be a lie.

“I’ll see you soon. May I suggest you try and get some sleep. With all due respect, you look like shit.”

And with those words ringing in my ears, Doc marches out of the room, and not long after, the house.

“Fuck,” I hiss, dropping my head into my hands.

“Bro, he’s not wrong. Have you looked in the mirror?” Ez teases, trying to lighten the mood.

Twisting around, I take in his equally exhausted face and barely manage to rein in a cutting remark when I remember that he was the one to save J’s life today.

Instead, I go with, “You hungry?”

“Yeah, fucking starving. What are you thinking?”

Pushing to my feet, I keep my eyes on JD.

“You gonna be okay here for a bit?”

“Yeah, Bro. I got it. Still got plenty of cleaning up to do,” he says, gesturing to the trail of blood that runs from the bathroom and across the bedroom carpet.

The words are on the tip of my tongue to tell him to leave it and that I’ll get someone in to do it.

But I swallow them down.

We can’t trust anyone to be here, to know about this right now.

If Victor knows we’re weak, then he might take his chance.

We need to keep face. As far as anyone outside of this house is concerned, everything is normal. Just me and J ruling from our castle on the hill.

Just me and J…

Why does that thought feel so fucking wrong now?

Refusing to allow reality outside of this situation to sneak in, I press my hands to my knees and stand up.

“I’ll be back.”

“Bring coffee,” Ez demands.

“Bro, who the fuck do you think I am?”

I take off, thoughts of everything that’s unravelling around me making each step harder than the last.

As I get to my kitchen and come to a stop in the middle, I realize just how empty and cold this place feels.

There are no mugs and plates littering the counter; there is no music, chatter or laughter filling the air.

It’s not something I ever thought was missing. But apparently, all it took was a few days for everything to change.

Stepping up to the sink, I curl my fingers around the counter and stare out the window at the valley beyond, wishing I could predict what’s going on down there, that I knew what moves Victor was planning.

He knows they were here; no words were needed when he passed me that hair tie.

That one simple move confirmed my worst fears. He’s on to me.

And it’s only a matter of time before he manages to turn the tables and have me at a disadvantage
